Dean, College of Arts and Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean. The nation’s first public university, UNC-Chapel Hill ranks among the world’s leading global research universities and is a member of the prestigious Association for American Universities (AAU). The College of Arts and Sciences is the University’s largest academic unit and is central to its mission. The Dean is responsible for the general education curriculum for all first- and second-year undergraduate students, as well as approximately 75% of the junior/senior majors. With 43 academic departments and interdisciplinary curricula, the College offers 115 undergraduate programs of study. In addition, the College of Arts and Sciences is a research powerhouse, receiving $127 million in research funding in FY 2021, making it the third-largest research enterprise at UNC-Chapel Hill, behind only the School of Medicine and Gillings School of Global Public Health. The Dean will report to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and will oversee a College with more than 19,000 students (bachelors, masters, and Ph.D.), 1,000 faculty (75% of whom are tenured/tenure-track), and an operating budget of $341 million.

The Dean will provide leadership in defining and communicating the College’s strategic goals. The Dean will promote a robust scholarship and research agenda, and will foster excellence and innovation in undergraduate and graduate education. The Dean will recruit and retain the best faculty, enhance their career development and empower them to participate in governance. The Dean will ensure a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for all members of the College community and will play a key role in fundraising.

Interested candidates should have credentials for appointment at Full Professor level, including a Ph.D. or other relevant terminal degree in a discipline offered by the College. The ideal candidate will have a distinguished reputation for sustained scholarly accomplishments, as well as a passion for undergraduate and graduate education. S/he will be an individual of unassailable integrity, a visionary leader, and a creative problem solver with a commitment to the mission of a global public research university. The ability to work effectively with university senior leadership and with faculty, superior communication skills, palpable affection for students of all types, and an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion are also essential.
