Middle School Long Term Science Substitute Teacher Department: Middle School Location: Washington, DC
Position Start Date: January 2022
Status: Temporary Full-Time

Sidwell Friends School, a co-educational Quaker day school in Washington, DC, seeks a long-term 7th-8th grade Science substitute teacher for the full month of January, 2022, beginning on Monday, January 3rd. We currently anticipate that the final date of the assignment would be Friday, January 28.

The 7/8 Science teacher will teach two sections each of two integrated science courses. The two courses work in tandem to tell the story of life on our planet, Earth’s place in the Universe, and the conditions that allow life to flourish on Earth. The 7th grade course is largely focused on the biosphere, while the 8th grade course is more heavily geared to Earth and Space systems. Both courses aim to make the science content relevant to students through connections to global issues such as biodiversity loss and global warming. Students need to make meaningful connections between many fields of science: ecology, evolution, genetics, human biology, geology, astronomy, atomic structure, and physical science concepts such as energy, heat, and chemical change. The ideal candidate will be able to weave together a wide range of science topics into two cohesive courses that inspire students to appreciate the intricacies of the natural world and to be engaged stewards of our planet.

Other duties include: advising a group of 7th and 8th grade students; taking notes to be used by the returning teacher in their reports; communicating and collaborating effectively with students, colleagues, and families; attending meetings; and collaborating with Science colleagues in the Middle School and other divisions.

Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred). Applicants must also have teaching experience, preferably at the middle school level.

The most desirable candidates will also be able to demonstrate proficiency using digital and online platforms and proven effectiveness as a classroom teacher in a brick-and-mortar setting. This position requires teaching in person.

As a condition of employment, all employees hired after August 1, 2021 are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and able to provide proof of such vaccination. To make application for a medical or religious exemption, please contact the human resources department.

Applicants should submit a resume, cover letter and contact information for three professional references via the Sidwell Friends on-line application system.
