The director of business development and partnerships is responsible for cultivating and maintaining relationships with local businesses and organizations to provide workforce development and training solutions such as apprenticeships, short-term trainings, and customized trainings. This position will generate new contract revenue for the College by offering training and performance improvement services that meet the needs of business and public sector employers in Howard County and, when appropriate, the surrounding region. This position will seek opportunities to consult with public and private sector organizations to acquire new customer business activity and partnerships for the College. The director of business development and partnerships will function as an external representative for continuing education and workforce development and will promote the College as a deliverer of high quality training solutions and services to customers.

  • Actively initiate and develop new business relationships with Howard County businesses, organizations and agencies for which the College can provide solutions including customized training and/or related business services.
  • Utilize proven sales strategies that result in revenue generating contracts for training, partnerships, and apprenticeship sponsorships to meet yearly target.
  • Assist the associate vice president of continuing education and workforce development and senior directors with developing a strategic plan for expanding partnerships and contract training which includes goals, timetables, and metrics.
  • Identify grant and training opportunities with federal, state and local government agencies.
  • Work closely with the associate vice president of continuing education and workforce development and senior directors to strategically identify areas of growth and outreach.
  • Establish and maintain ongoing high-quality, trusting client relationships.
  • Research businesses and organizations to identify and assess qualified business leads.
  • Meet with prospective clients to provide information regarding proposed solutions and maximize use of federal, state and county funding opportunities to add value to client contracts where appropriate.
  • Provide thorough and complete information to clients regarding institutional capacity and resources, to include credit and continuing education programs, partnerships, customized and commercial products.
  • Maintain the customer relationship management system to update client information and activity and generate metrics and reports for periodic review.
  • Assist with Training & Development Solutions and apprenticeship-related social media posts and marketing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor's degree in sales and marketing, business management, marketing, or closely related field required. Master's degree preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in selling, marketing, and relationship development, preferably within higher education.
  • Demonstrated track record in generating annual sales revenue in excess of $500,000 preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in consultative selling techniques and contract negotiations.
  • Experience in budgeting and forecasting essential.

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Regular attendance is a requirement of this job.
  • Performs all duties while considering the impact of any actions on the college's sustainability initiatives in the areas of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic prosperity.

Hours Per Week: 37.5
Work Schedule: M-F with some evenings and weekends
Compensation: $69,084 commensurate with experience plus excellent medical & dental, tuition reimbursement and paid leave
Grade: 17

As a participating member of the Maryland Retirement and Pension System, HCC offers two retirement options: The Pension, which requires a 7% employee contribution and The ORP, a 403(b) with a 7.25% employer contribution only. Employees in positions that do not require a bachelor's degree must participate in The Pension. Employees that possess a bachelor's degree and hold professional positions that require a bachelor's degree may choose to participate in either The Pension or The ORP.
