Digital Filmmaking Production Faculty

The School of Communication & Design at Loyola University New Orleans is searching for an enthusiastic and energetic filmmaker with a broad foundation in filmmaking and advanced skills in practical production. This faculty member will maintain a high contact presence with students, support an experiential learning environment, and guide students on how to become accomplished filmmakers.

Instructor load will be four courses (12 credit-hours) each semester within the Digital Filmmaking curriculum. Required courses include multiple sections of Introduction to Digital Filmmaking in the Fall and Spring semesters. This course introduces students to screenwriting, story, camera, sound, double system production and editing in a hands-on style.

Additional courses each semester could include Audio for Film and TV, Documentary Filmmaking, Cinematography, Entrepreneurial Production, Senior Film Project, Script to Screen, or other production-based courses depending on the needs of the department and applicant’s areas of expertise.

Duties:

- Teach various courses from the Digital Filmmaking curriculum as outlined above.
- Work with other faculty members to jointly manage the DFM Equipment Room, Studio, and Post Facilities.
- Maintain campus presence via regularly scheduled on-campus office hours.
- Advise students to ensure successful completion of their degree requirements.
- Participate in regularly scheduled college, school and departmental meetings, activities, and events, and demonstrate a collaborative and collegial demeanor.
- Learn and employ standard Loyola methods of communication and data management including Loyola email, Canvas, Celtx, LORA, and others.
- Conduct visits to student shoots/sets for supervision and consultation as needed.
- Participate in outreach efforts aimed at expanding enrollment and success of Loyola’s filmmaking program.
- Guide students in their readiness to become active professionals through mentoring, advising, and encouraging their efforts to enter competitions and festivals and seek internships within the professional filmmaking community.
- Other similar duties as needed and defined by the Chair.

Qualifications:

- MFA or terminal degree in Film Production coupled with professional single camera double system filmmaking
experience. (union camera crew member, director of photography, assistant director preferred)A demonstrated proficiency in practical production and postproduction.
- Experience teaching film production courses at the college level.
- Experience working with and teaching a diverse group of students.
- Experience supervising students performing technical tasks related to film production.
- Proficiency working with computer software and hardware including Avid Media Composer, Avid Pro Tools, DSLR, and cinema grade digital cameras, audio recorders and microphones.
- Experience and familiarity with the handling of digital content including camera and audio files, media
organization, and logging.
- Membership in professional guilds or organizations associated with the film industry
- Commitment to impressing upon students the role and preeminence of Story as the driver of technical decision making.

A successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of and experience in traditional filmmaking techniques and business models. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a command of both the technical aspects of filmmaking and the aesthetics of cinematography and storytelling, and a working knowledge of either camera department or assistant director roles and responsibilities. The successful candidate should also demonstrate a desire and passion for teaching and facilitating the success of students from a diverse set of cultures and life experiences.
