GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for all aspects of the Environment, Society & Sustainability Department's instructional materials. The Lab Tech schedules, maintains, repairs, curates and orders all of the laboratory and field equipment and supplies used in the Department; maintains the equipment and supply budget for the Department; and effectively communicates with other Department laboratory technicians for coordination of equipment and supply ordering.

EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares materials, samples, solutions, cultures, reagents, etc. for laboratory experiments, tests, and instruction.
  • Sets up experiments and class exercises, including Vernier and other digital laboratory apparatus; and breaks down such materials after class.
  • Cleans, maintains, and repairs laboratory areas and equipment.
  • Maintains inventories of supplies and equipment; orders laboratory materials as needed.
  • Performs related duties such as maintaining records, logs, and schedules of equipment use, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Maintains the department's equipment and supplies budget accounts.
  • Ensures that all personnel protective equipment in the laboratories is available and in proper working condition.
  • Assembles, installs, and operates equipment, instrumentation, and other apparatus in classrooms or laboratories to support research and instructional activities.
  • Adjusts, calibrates, and tests technical, laboratory, and/or other instructional equipment and its components according to specifications, standards, diagrams, technical manuals, and/or instructions of professional.
  • Provides on-the-job training to work-study students.
  • Confers with professional staff and faculty concerning methods and procedures and to exchange information.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The scheduled hours are flexible between the hours the 8:30am and 4:30pm with the option to have some hours before 8:30 am and/or after 4:30 pm.



Job Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physics, the Earth Sciences or other related field; equivalent scientific experience or academic credentials considered.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for operation, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment typically found in Physics and Geology laboratories.
  • Basic computer skills, including the use of the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Good problem solving skills, analytical ability, organization skills, and written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to identify needed action without direction.
  • Knowledge of calibration and adjustment techniques as applied to laboratory equipment
  • Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of chemicals, acids, and materials used in a laboratory.
  • Ability to understand and apply the policies, procedures, specifications, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • Ability to explain the policies, procedures, specifications, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • Working knowledge of chemical hygiene plans.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to gather information through observing and questioning individuals and by examining records and documents.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to prepare and use charts, graphs, and tables on computer.
  • Ability to perform arithmetical computations with speed and accuracy (addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication).
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral expressions and in writing.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to distinguish colors visually.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Manual dexterity.
  • Ability to accurately prepare solutions of specified concentrations from available stock chemicals.
  • Working knowledge of all applicable Federal and State Regulations pertaining to the safe and proper operation of a laboratory including, but not limited to:
    • Federal and State Hazardous Waste labeling, classification, storage, and disposal of laboratory materials regulations;
    • OSHA and the Massachusetts Department of Safety regulations involving the safe inventory, dispensing, labeling, storage, and management of all laboratory chemicals and supplies; and
    • OSHA Hazardous Communication and the Massachusetts Right to Know laws and the proper use and maintenance of required Personal Protective Equipment.

.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a teaching laboratory setting.
  • Experience using computer-based laboratory equipment.
  • Programing experience (Python, R, Matlab).
  • Experience piloting UAVs.


Additional Information:

This is a part-time non-benefited, contract position, not to exceed 18 hours per week. The pay rate is $25 per hour.
