SUMMARY
The Recruitment and International Specialist is primarily responsible for matters related to recruiting out of state, private school, and home school students and students from diverse cultural backgrounds, including international and non-native English-speaking students. This includes interfacing with other offices in Student Services, Public Relations and Marketing, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, and Academic Affairs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
A. Be the main point of contact for out of state, private school, and home school students.
1. Visit schools providing presentations and communicating with students, counselors, other school personnel, and parents about opportunities at HCC.
2. Attend college fairs and other events to increase recognition of
the college.
3. Maintain strong positive relationships with all high school
personnel and home school educators ensuring they have written and
electronic information on all programs, including contact
information.
B. Ensure print, media, online recruitment material is updated to
specifically encourage out of state, private school, and home
school students to enroll.
1. Be well versed in sharing financial aid, including the Maryland Promise Program information (when applicable), in a way that meets prospective student and parent needs.
2. Communicate with high school counselors and parents about
important dates, deadlines, and opportunities.
C. Assist with the ESSENCE Program as it relates to on-campus and
dual enrollment opportunities and classes offered at the high
schools.
1. Approve participation in the ESSENCE program; provide general academic advisement for ESSENCE registration.
2. Work with students who are eligible to apply for the ESSENCE
Supplemental Scholarship, and HCC Foundation Scholarships.
3. Assist the Director in working with HCC academic affairs
colleagues regarding classes offered within each high school and
with Continuing Education colleagues regarding instructional
opportunities for home school students.
D. Coordinate and maintain a schedule/calendar of all high school
related visits that may include Academic Advisors, faculty or other
HCC faculty or staff representatives.
E. Coordinate recruitment initiatives and outreach for diverse
populations.
1. Works with WCPS and out of state high schools by connecting with diverse student populations, including prospective international, non-native English speaking, Maryland Dream Act and DACA students.
2. Serve as a liaison and provides outreach to diverse cultural
community groups, religious organizations, local businesses
employing diverse groups, and HCC Adult Literacy Services
English-language programs.
3. Recruit and work with other HCC student services personnel to
retain and graduate multicultural students in career programs,
including coordinating a mentoring program for multicultural
students enrolled in career programs at HCC.
F. Oversees the International Student Admission Process
1. Serve as designated SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) official for Hagerstown Community College; maintains ongoing training as is required by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
2. Works with all students in regards to the international student
admissions process.
3. Assist non-U.S. Citizens with enrollment to the college.
G. Provide ongoing outreach and follow-up to prospective students
who have not applied for admission and/or enrolled in classes.
H. Other duties as assigned from the Director of Admissions and
Enrollment Management.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree required, Master's degree preferred. Two years professional admissions experience preferred. Experience working with diverse populations is required. Preference is given to candidates who have worked in social work and/or job training and/or basic literacy development settings. Fluency in written and spoken English and Spanish is preferred. Experience with Ellucian/Datatel Colleague is a plus.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multitask; proficient computer skills to include working with a student database system. Knowledge of student on-line systems; strong ability to work with others in a team environment in a collegiate manner; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to deal tactfully and effectually with prospective students, guidance counselors, parents and HCC staff: and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
TRAINING
Immediately upon starting position, receive training as the designated SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) official for Hagerstown Community College; maintains ongoing training as is required by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
