Brief Summary of Work for this Position

To instantiate our values of Access, Equity, and Diversity, the UNCW College of Arts and Sciences ( CAS ) is embarking on our second year of a cluster hire initiative in the areas of Africana Studies, Race, Racial Inequality, and Social Justice. The position of Assistant Professor of Communication Studies within the Department of Communication Studies is part of this initiative.

The Department of Communication Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is seeking a nine-month tenure-track Assistant Professor starting August 2022.

The successful candidate will teach integrated marketing communication, rhetoric, design, media production, and/or critical and culture studies in indigenous and American Indian/Native American/Alaska Native Studies/First Nation studies and in our MA Integrated Marketing Communication ( IMC ) program.

Candidates should also be able to share a vision of high impact, experiential teaching practices, including applied learning working with non-profit clients and students to create integrated marketing communication deliverables. We aim to create a center for the study and practice of indigenous integrated marketing communication that examines artifacts, cultural products, research methods, media products, and the practice of integrated marketing communication and strategic communication in indigenous and tribal organizations. This position would contribute to the strategic vision of this center while supporting our indigenous student population in careers in tribal and indigenous cultural, community, and health organizations and tribal governments.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

• Doctoral degree in communication, rhetoric, or strategic communication or related fields with a research interest or cognate in Native American/Indigenous Studies OR Doctoral degree in Native American or Indigenous Studies with a research interest or cognate in communication, rhetoric, persuasion, or strategic communication or related fields.
• Applicants who are ABD will be considered; however, PhD must be obtained within the first academic year of employment.
• Experience with high impact, experiential teaching practices, including applied learning working with non-profit clients and students to create integrated marketing communication deliverables.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate:

• Experience creating and teaching online courses.
• Excellence in teaching and a vibrant research agenda related to integrated marketing communication, indigenous communication studies, or a related field.
• An approach to teaching, research, and research methodology that respects and promotes diversity and inclusion in higher education.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Department of Communication Studies strives to be an intentional community of engaged teacher-scholars. We work independently and collaboratively to create powerful learning experiences for our students and to create a great place to come and work. We balance subject matter expertise with whole student development and look to be role models of what we teach. UNCW is a growing university located on a beautiful 640-acre campus that is just minutes from a historic downtown and Wrightsville Beach. We have a digital production/TV studio, a Mac Labs and video edit suite, and a student-run IMC firm (Pier601 Creative). UNCW is an Adobe Creative Campus and all students have free access to Adobe Creative Cloud applications. We have approximately 550 undergraduate majors and 100 graduate students in our fully online M.A. in Integrated Marketing Communication, launched in August 2019.

The University of North Carolina Wilmington occupies the traditional territory of the Catawba People and has long served as a site of meeting and exchange for many Indigenous peoples, including the Coharie, Lumbee, Meherrin, Occaneechi Saponi, Haliwa Saponi, Waccamaw Siouan, Sappony, and the Eastern Band of Cherokee.

College/School Information

The College of Arts and Sciences is UNCW’s largest academic unit and awards approximately two-thirds of the university’s academic credits. Ours is a comprehensive arts and sciences college comprising the arts, the humanities, the mathematical and natural sciences, and the social and behavioral sciences.

The College’s twenty-five units offer a variety of undergraduate majors leading to the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Fine Arts, the Bachelor of Music, and the Bachelor of Science. Through applied learning, students in the College gain direct hands-on experience with the skills of their major fields as an essential part of their preparation for life and career.

In addition to its undergraduate major and minor programs, the College is chiefly responsible for the curriculum that comprises the UNCW’s University Studies Program, through which all UNCW undergraduates gain a foundation in the liberal arts and develop the transferable skills essential for life in the twenty-first century. The College strives in its undergraduate programs and in its University Study offerings to nurture creative thinking, intellectual curiosity, diversity and inclusion, and academic integrity in students while providing them with a solid foundation of knowledge in their chosen fields. Upon completion of their undergraduate studies, College of Arts and Sciences students will have the necessary preparation for rewarding careers, advanced study, effective citizenship, and meaningful lives.

Graduate degrees awarded in the College of Arts and Sciences include the Master of Arts, the Master of Fine Arts, the Master of Public Administration, the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy (Marine Biology and Psychology). In addition, the nationally awarded Graduate Liberal Studies program offers a personalized curriculum of interdisciplinary study leading to the Master of Arts. Post-baccalaureate certificates in Applied Statistics, Environmental Studies, Forensic Science, Conflict Management and Resolution, Gender Studies and Hispanic Studies are available. Graduate programs in the College are designed to develop intellectual competence and to prepare the student for careers in business, industry, government, teaching or for further study at the doctoral level.
