The College of Veterinary Medicine’s Department of Comparative, Diagnostic, and Population Medicine at the University of Florida (UF) invites applications to join the UF Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories and the Anatomic Pathology service as a full time, non-tenure Clinical-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Veterinary Anatomic Pathology and the Director of the UF Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories. The position will be 65-70% administration and 30-35% diagnostic service/teaching/research.

The Director of Laboratory Services is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the laboratory. The Lab Director is responsible for working with the Service Chiefs and Lab Managers in the establishment, implementation and oversight of the Quality Management System to ensure that the laboratory provides accurate and reliable test results. Additionally, the Lab Director directs the long-range strategic planning, operations, and/or administrative activities in the University of Florida’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories (UFVDL) which may include Anatomic Pathology Services, Clinical Pathology Services, Immunology/Serology, Parasitology, Microbiology and Laboratory Information Technology. The Director is also responsible for ensuring development of new services and methodologies and assisting state and federal animal regulatory agencies in the control of animal infectious diseases. The Director will provide public service through supporting the agricultural community and the companion animal owning public and will serve as the professional contact for consultation, diagnosis and investigation of animal disease problems submitted to the laboratory by veterinarians, animal producers and animal owners. The Director will be highly visible and actively involved serving as a liaison between UFVDL and USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL), AAVLD and NAHLN. As a clinical faculty, depending on the interests of the individual and the needs of the department, the individual will also participate in and support teaching, diagnostic service activities of the Anatomic Pathology Service, and/or participate in collaborative research. Teaching responsibilities will involve didactic and clinical training of professional students and residents, and opportunities also exist for graduate student mentorship and education.

The UF College of Veterinary Medicine is the ninth ranked College of Veterinary Medicine in the US and is the only one that is part of a top 10 public research university (UF is ranked #5 nationally). The College of Veterinary Medicine is located on campus in close proximity to the College of Medicine and numerous other Health Sciences units that provide ample opportunities for translational research and collaboration. The Veterinary Anatomic Pathology service is composed of ten faculty, six residents, three necropsy staff members and six histology staff members. Opportunities also exist to make contributions in established veterinary specialty services such as aquatic pathology, forensic pathology, ocular pathology and dermatopathology, or to form additional specialty areas. The Anatomic Pathology residency is a three-year program structured to prepare trainees for possible academic and diagnostic careers.

The University of Florida Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories are comprised of dedicated individuals who strive for excellence in diagnostics to improve animal and human health. We are currently in the accreditation process of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians; experience in AAVLD-accredited laboratories is helpful. Upon successful accreditation, this position will be ultimately responsible that all lab operations comply with and operate according to the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) requirements.

Essential Qualifications for this position are DVM, VMD, or equivalent foreign veterinary degree plus at least two years of experience working as a diagnostic lab director within a college of veterinary medicine.

Experience in an academic setting managing veterinary diagnostic staff. Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise professional employees. Board certification in Anatomic Pathology.
