Job Summary

Reporting to the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education (VP Ug Ed), the Curriculum and Academic Program Analyst works under limited supervision with broad responsibility for planning, organizing and prioritizing work in order to oversee development and maintenance of the SJSU academic curriculum and degree program requirements. Using knowledge of WASC, CSU, and SJSU curriculum policies, the Analyst works proactively to establish campus procedures and timelines that will complete the annual curriculum review process in a timely and accurate manner, resulting in the updates to the PeopleSoft curriculum database and the on-line SJSU catalog.

The Analyst works in collaboration with the VP Ug Ed to formulate policy and procedure recommendations that will improve the SJSU curriculum review and development process by promoting efficiency and avoiding errors. The Analyst must evaluate the impact of recommended or implemented policies from a strategic and operational perspective; must work with Information Technology, Registrar, Articulation, Scheduling and Enrollment Services to ensure both the integration and compliance of academic programs and curriculum policies with university processes and procedures.

The Analyst must maintain effective communication with the faculty committees at the department, college, and university levels to communicate curriculum policy changes and requirements and to assist them to revise department curriculum and degree templates. The Curriculum Analyst works with the eCatalog Analyst to produce the web-based SJSU Catalog. An accurate and functional curriculum system is a critical mission element affecting all faculty and students in the delivery and awarding of all degrees. This work requires knowledge of Title 5, WASC and CSU academic policies, PeopleSoft academic curriculum structures, articulation, program planning and all aspects of curriculum structure and development sufficient to support independent determination of methods to meet programmatic and administrative goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyzes and manages the SJSU curriculum development and maintenance process with regard to compliance with Title 5, WASC, CSU and SJSU academic program policies
  • Works in collaboration with the VP Ug Ed, Associate Dean Ug Ed, and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies to identify problems, develop solutions and recommend improvements to SJSU curriculum policy and processes
  • Recommends approaches to displaying curriculum and academic program requirements in online, easily accessible, and user-friendly formats
  • Manages curriculum proposals and establishes annual curriculum review process deadlines and assignments to colleges, departments, and other units
  • Participates in curriculum planning and development discussions and provides strategic consultation to implement new types of programs
  • Serves as a source of curriculum policy advice to support effective academic program planning and development at key university committees (e.g., Curriculum & Research, Undergraduate Studies, General Education Advisory Committee)
  • Provides staff support to the following committees: Curriculum and Research Committee, Undergraduate Studies Committee, and General Education Advisory Committee
  • Conducts research and provides recommendations for solutions to a variety of curricular problems, including monitoring and reporting course duplications, proliferation, or inactivity and fiscal
  • Assists in the preparation of special studies, projects, reports and materials with broad campus and system impact for submission to the Provost, President, Chancellor’s Office, WASC and other agencies
  • Evaluates the academic program and curriculum impact of recommended or implemented policies from a strategic and operational perspective and recommends actions to avoid or resolve problems
  • Analyzes and ensures the accuracy of the CMS (PeopleSoft) course catalog .
  • Builds and tests the Enrollment Requisites for courses. Troubleshoots enrollment requisite issues during registration periods
  • Manages curriculum management system (Curriculog) and informs relevant committees to assist in workflow planning
  • Maintains communication with all appropriate offices regarding policy implementation.
  • Reviews curricular proposals for completeness, correctness and adherence to policies and guidelines
  • Validates and troubleshoots the Curriculog export process for the CMS (PeopleSoft) course catalog
  • Collaborates with VP Ug Ed and IESA to report degree program data to WASC and CSU, including updates as needed to CSU Degree Database
  • With support from IESA, reports to the Chancellor’s Office the accreditation schedule and the list of SJSU’s professionally accredited programs
  • Provides curriculum information and consultation, as required, to programs undergoing curriculum or program change(s)
  • Offers regular training sessions to inform advisors, departments, college committees and university committees of changes in curriculum policies or procedures
  • Manages curriculum and academic program content on the curriculum website Provides course tagging support to measure key institutional goals (e.g. service learning, HIPs, sustainability)
  • Provides curriculum support for Articulation, Transfer Degrees, CourseMatch, Academic Scheduling and related programs
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of SJSU academic program methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling
  • Ability to make constructive recommendations for modifications or improvements of procedures or programs
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply expertise to complex programs and/or administrative specialties, including pertinent policies, procedures, laws and regulations
  • Ability to independently interpret and apply related procedures and policies and present recommendations or information to individuals or groups in a persuasive manner
  • Ability to investigate and analyze problems having broad administrative impact
  • Skill in collection and evaluation of data to develop valid conclusions and recommendations
  • Ability to effectively present ideas and concepts in written or presentation format and use consultative and facilitation skills to gain consensus
  • Experience in preparing, writing, and editing general communications, technical reports, training guidelines and informational materials
  • Skill in software applications: word processing, spreadsheet, database management
  • Experience in PeopleSoft curriculum and student records areas; ability to work with Curriculog, Acalog, and other necessary technical tools
  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU, and SJSU policies and procedures
  • Ability to make independent decisions and exercise sound judgment
  • Strong oral communication skills. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills
  • Knowledge of applicable university infrastructure, policies and procedures as related to articulation, transfer credit and graduation requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the work group
Required Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training
  • Four years of administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with curriculum development, curriculum management and academic advising. Prefer knowledge of SJSU and/or curriculum and degrees
  • Experience using PeopleSoft student administrative software, Curriculog or an equivalent database
  • Experience with developing and updating websites using content management system
  • Excellent written communications skills as demonstrated in writing sample
Compensation

Classification: Administrative Analyst/Specialist, Exempt II
Anticipated Hiring Range: up to $6,000/month
Salary Range: $4,693/month - $8,489/month
