Professional Responsibilities (70%)
  • Collaborates with librarians, faculty, and instructors in Humanities disciplines to teach research skills by developing course integrated instruction, assignments, and assessment tools that evaluate learning outcomes. Provides research support to faculty, students, researchers, visiting scholars, and the general public whose research relates to Humanities disciplines, in collaboration with Libraries colleagues, Institute for Digital Research in the Humanities and university partners.
  • Responds to instructional and research needs across disciplines as part of the Research & Learning team. The librarian promotes the integration of information literacy into the curriculum, measures student learning outcomes, and assesses programming in support of student success. In collaboration with colleagues, supports researcher needs through consultations and training across disciplines. Participates in services and program development such as Research Sprints , Information Literacy Mini-Grants , Software Carpentry , and systematic reviews .
  • Builds, evaluates, and assesses collections through review and selection of materials related to assigned disciplines, including English, Literature, Religion, Philosophy, and Classics. This includes monitoring approval plans, reviewing journal package and database renewals, collection reviews and relevant subject guides. Uses data to analyze and improve how our collections represent diverse voices, and how well our collections serve the needs of diverse campus communities and constituents.
  • Communicates issues implicit in scholarly communication and open access in discussions with colleagues within and beyond the KU community.
  • Works collaboratively as a member of project teams and other groups to advance the libraries’ strategic priorities.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to advancing diversity efforts in the libraries and contributes to an inclusive environment. Research (20%)
  • Contributes to the profession’s collective knowledge by engaging in scholarly research activity.
  • Research may involve the publication of articles, books, book reviews, grant-supported inquiry, or editorial work (see Discipline Expectations for Library Faculty at KU ).
Service (10%)
  • Engages in service to the Libraries, the University and to professional organizations by participating in committee work, projects, and other contributory achievements.

Position Overview

This position has the option of a hybrid work arrangement. Incumbent may work remotely and on campus based on a set departmental schedule.
KU Libraries seeks an individual to support the research and curricular needs of faculty, staff, and students with a particular emphasis on the Humanities.

The Humanities Librarian is a member of the Research & Learning unit, which is dedicated to supporting the research and teaching enterprise of the University of Kansas. The successful candidate will be a key contributor to advancing the libraries’ goals to integrate information literacy into the curriculum, establish new modes of instruction, and cultivate partnerships in support of student success and retention. The librarian works with academic programs, departments and centers to support researchers at all levels throughout the lifecycle. This position also works collaboratively with the Collections Strategy and Development Department to proactively evaluate and promote innovative and inclusive approaches to develop collections in Humanities disciplines, including English Literature, Religion, Philosophy, and Classics. This position reports to the Head of the Center for Faculty Initiatives & Engagement.

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position. Rank considerations are based on professional performance, research, and service experience sufficient to qualify for appointment at the rank of Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian.
