Scope of Job:
The primary purpose of the Medical Director of Surgical Oncology is to provide broad direction and coordination of all activities within the discipline of oncologic surgery. The Medical Director is responsible for the strategic planning, budgeting, coordination, performance, and evaluation of all activities within the department. In carrying out the institution's mission, the department head will develop and maintain programs to provide (1) excellent, compassionate, and comprehensive interdisciplinary care for cancer patients; (2) opportunities for faculty to conduct fundamental and clinical investigations at the level of the departments; (3) education for fellows, residents, medical students, and other trainees at the level of the department; (4) support for global activities. In addition, the Medical Director will, through the department chairs, provide documentation of the quality of patient care and its efficient and cost-effective management. The Medical Director is responsible for overseeing recruitment and retention of faculty and staff within the departments. Establish standards of academic and clinical performance for the Department of Surgical Oncology. Lead strategic planning for laboratory, clinical and population-based research and for clinical activities in the department. Provide an environment that values the development and facilitation of quality clinical and research programs. Promote and facilitate integration of clinical care and research within the department. Promote scholarly activities within the department. Practice surgical oncology in an exemplary manner adhering to standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the American College of Surgeons or equivalent. Requires the ability to visually monitor patient progress, verbally communicate with the patients, comprehend complex medical data, and communicate either verbally or in writing with referring and consulting physicians. Actively engage in and encourage clinical or basic research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the Department through the development of programs in the sciences which are in keeping with the goals of the Department. Requires the ability to synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to the area of research and provide verbal or written communication with faculty members in this regard. It will be necessary to seek appropriate funding mechanisms to support the research activities and will require the ability to communicate with granting agencies either verbally or in writing. Demonstrated experience in multidisciplinary research and cooperative group protocols is particularly important. Provide a balanced and integrated educational program for the fellows, residents and students who either are in, or rotate through the Department. Demonstrated commitment to surgical educational programs and development of trainee education is expected. Actively manage state and federal regulatory requirements for surgical oncology. Demonstrate knowledge of surgical oncology reimbursement issues. Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of the faculty within the Department. Serve as a role model in surgical oncology as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, and students. Direct the investment of capital expenditures for enhancement of the clinical and research missions.

Minimum Qualifications:
The applicant should have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in academic surgery, with a practice that is predominantly oncology focused. The candidate must have demonstrated experience in administration at the departmental or institutional level in addition to a proven track record in clinical and/or laboratory research. The candidate must be board certified in surgery or a surgical specialty and must hold or be eligible for a Texas Medical License.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
