Assistant Professor, Youth Development

Location: Lehotsky 263 PRTM

Clemson University seeks candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Youth Development in an expanding Youth Development Programs (YDP) area within the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (PRTM). Job responsibilities include teaching in an established online M.S. degree program in Youth Development Leadership and an online undergraduate youth development minor.

Competitive candidates will be expected to demonstrate a high level of research success and maintain a rigorous, nationally recognized research program, including frequently publishing in scholarly journals and the potential for securing substantial external grant funding. Demonstrated interest and experience in promoting youth development initiatives both nationally and internationally is encouraged. Research focus is open, but advance applied quantitative and/or qualitative methodological expertise is preferred. Candidates should also have youth development program delivery or engagement experience. Competitive candidates will be expected to collaborate in research efforts with other program areas and faculty across the PRTM department, and throughout the college. Additionally, successful candidates will engage in service to the profession and University.

This position is available starting in August 2022 and located on the campus of Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.

Youth Development Programs, PRTM, and Clemson University

The Youth Development Programs area within PRTM currently consists of tenure-track faculty, lecturers, an outreach coordinator, and graduate and post-doctorate researchers. Graduate Assistants support teaching and research activities based on available resources. YDP enrolls cohorts of approximately 25 master's degree students annually, with two cohorts served over any two-year period (50 students total). Additionally, more than 400 undergraduate students are served annually through the online undergraduate minor. An overview of the Youth Development Leadership M.S. degree program is available here.

Clemson PRTM is among the most innovative, comprehensive, and successful programs of its kind in the nation and the world. We serve 359 undergraduate majors, over and 162 graduate students, with learning options in six areas of focus, including community recreation and sport management, park and conservation area management, recreational therapy, travel and tourism, youth development leadership, and nonprofit leadership (undergraduate certificate and minor). QUALIFICATIONS
  • Earned doctorate in a relevant social science discipline by the date of employment (e.g., Education, Family Studies, Human Development, Parks and Recreation, Psychology, Public Health, Social Work, Sociology, or other related disciplines)
  • A strong record of scholarly activity, publications, and grants and/or the potential to develop a highly successful research program that frequently includes these outcomes
  • Experience or demonstrated potential to successfully teach in an online environment
  • Experience or demonstrated potential to effectively work with non-traditional students
  • Experience serving diverse audiences and awareness of student engagement through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens
  • Experience or demonstrated potential to teach, advise, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students
