Description

The Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health supported by the Center for Humanitarian Health is leading a search for an Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure track) with a focus on humanitarian health. The Department has a rich history of research and practice work in humanitarian settings. Our faculty have been at the forefront of academic training and research in humanitarian emergencies with an interdisciplinary approach, applying expertise from a range of specialties including epidemiology, demography, emergency and disaster medicine and nursing, health systems, management, epidemics and pandemics, communicable and non-communicable diseases, food security, law, and human rights – to address humanitarian health issues in diverse settings. Future areas of work include greater emphasis on climate change, migration, and global health security.

The faculty member would form an integral part of the academic training and research programs at the Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health (CHH; a World Health Organization Collaborating Center) as well as the Health Systems Program in the Department of International Health. The candidate should possess relevant (or transferable) skills for instructing degree and certificate courses in humanitarian health and advising master’s degree and doctoral students pursuing professional (DrPH) and research (Ph.D.) degrees in these areas.

The faculty member would form an integral part of the academic training and research programs at the Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health (CHH; a World Health Organization Collaborating Center) as well as the Health Systems Program in the Department of International Health.

Qualifications

The candidate should possess relevant (or transferable) skills for instructing degree and certificate courses in humanitarian health and advising master’s degree and doctoral students pursuing professional (DrPH) and research (PhD) degrees in these areas.

Eligible candidates should have a specialization in humanitarian health with a doctoral level degree in the field of public health, medicine, statistics, social sciences or other related discipline, or a medical or nursing degree with a Master of Public Health. Applicants should have experience in conducting research (qualitative and/or quantitative); implementation and/or evaluation of humanitarian programs, policies and innovations, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs); and teaching courses in these areas of humanitarian health. Experience with program evaluation, impact assessment, surveillance, policy development and health systems would be particularly welcome, as is experience collaborating with Ministries of Health, United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations and other organizations involved in humanitarian health in LMIC settings. Candidates with lived experience in humanitarian settings are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates should have practical field experience, including but not limited to working with NGOs or UN organization. At the associate professor level, a record of participating in securing grants, especially peer-reviewed funding applications, and publications in humanitarian health and allied fields is essential. At the assistant professor level, the candidate should either have experience in securing research or practice grants or be willing to develop that skill with support from other faculty at the Center. The candidate is expected to collaborate with colleagues in LMICs in the area of humanitarian health. Over time, a candidate applicant will be expected to develop and eventually help obtain funding for and support a portfolio of rigorous research and service activities that focus on humanitarian health, aligning with the International Health Department’s 2020-2024 Health Strategy . The candidate is expected to be part of the CHH’s leadership team. Fluency in English is required, and proficiency in a second language e.g., French, Spanish or Arabic is preferred.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
