Departmental Overview

The University Health Services (UHS) serves the campus as a comprehensive campus-based health center providing fully accredited primary medical care, counseling and psychological services and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty and staff. UHS provides on-campus medical and mental health care and coordinates off-campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals. Departments serving students include general medical, specialty and urgent care clinics, counseling and psychological services, laboratory, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology and health promotion. Responsibilities

As a key member of the Clinical Services Management Team, under the general direction of the Medical Director, the Associate Medical Director is responsible for ensuring that issues affecting clinical practice, quality of care, and clinician job satisfaction are appropriately managed in Primary & Urgent Care. In conjunction with an active clinical practice, the Associate Medical Director assumes responsibility for directly or indirectly supervising primary and urgent care clinicians, and assumes a leadership role in assuring quality and consistency of care. The Associate Medical Director provides assistance to the Medical Director in matters that most affect clinical practice, and functions as a strategic partner/consultant to higher levels of management.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Staff Leadership
  • Supervises career and contract physicians in the Primary Care and Urgent Care Clinics, directly or indirectly, including recruitment, hiring, credentialing, privileging, orientation, proctoring, and performance appraisal.
  • May supervise and support subordinate managers within clinical services including Nurse Practitioner Supervisor and Urgent Care Lead Physician.
  • Key member of Clinical Services Management and Primary Care Leadership Teams
  • Leads Clinician Practice Meetings and Physician staff meetings.
  • Works closely with Operational Manager(s) to develop clinician staffing plans for academic year and break periods
  • Assists the Medical Director in addressing service-wide issues relating to quality of patient care and patient satisfaction. Is a permanent member of the Clinical Case Review Committee and Quality Improvement Committee.

Strategic leadership, integration, and service improvement.
  • Participates actively in developing and implementing the UHS strategic plan within clinical services
  • Works with mental health leadership to troubleshoot/problem solve communication issues between the units, with a goal of providing seamless integrated care for UHS clients.
  • Works with UHS Electronic Health Record (EHR) support teams to further integrate and improve use of EHR in all patient care areas, improving the efficiency and quality of clinically appropriate documentation, and harnessing the power of the EHR to track on UHS' performance on defined preventive care and outcome measures
  • May play a lead role in UHS response to communicable disease outbreaks, emergency preparedness, and crisis work

Expert clinician resource
  • Functions as a resource for consultation on complex or difficult patient cases.
  • Evaluates and reviews patient clinical records as part of CCRC and peer review processes to determine if appropriate treatment is being provided
  • Shares with the Medical Director the responsibility of evaluating and responding to student comments or complaints about the medical component of visits to UHS.
  • Shares with the Medical Director the responsibility for providing medical consultation and review for laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, and physical therapy services. May act as liaison between the clinician group and the Laboratory Director.
  • Maintains an active clinical practice in Primary and Urgent Care, incorporating all the job responsibilities of the Physician 4.

Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience providing primary and/or urgent care to adults and/or adolescents; advanced clinical skills appropriate to role as expert clinician consultant
  • Managerial, administrative, and/or supervisory experience in a clinical setting
  • Advanced communication skills; proven ability to collaborate with and influence others
  • Expert familiarity with medical records systems and advanced computer literacy
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to the professional identity, interests and skills of other team members, including nurses, nurse practitioners and other mid-level clinicians, health educators, support staff, and administration.
  • Capacity to develops constructive and caring professional relationships, consistent with UHS statement of Patient's Rights and Responsibilities, characterized by: respect for the patient as an individual regardless of cultural, racial/ethnic background, gender identity, or sexual orientation; recognition of his/her rights as a client; concern for the problems or questions that brought him/her to health care; and understanding of the social and environmental context of health on the college campus.

Education, Training, Licensure, & Certifications
  • Board-certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Primary Care specialty (strongly preferred), OR Board certification in other ABMS specialty with appropriate primary care training/experience. MOC participation required, when relevant.
  • Current State of California Medical License and in possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Medical Board.
  • Current California medical license, DEA license, basic CPR certification, ACLS certification, CURES Registration, and UHS "Qualifications for Physician Employment."

Preferred Qualifications
  • Clinical experience in a college health setting
  • Experience leading continuous quality improvement within a clinical setting

Salary & Benefits
