The Society Executive Director reports to the Managing Director of IEEE Technical Activities, partners with the Society President, and coordinates with other Society Executive Directors and IEEE staff leaders. They typically serve as ex-officio non-voting members of the Society Administrative and Executive Committees (AdCom/ExCom) as well as the Society Committees reporting to the AdCom and ExCom.
Key Responsibilities- Leads and provides broad-based business management for an $11 million global budget as an OU within IEEE financial management systems; Works with volunteers to develop and forecast the annual budget; Responsible for the financial health and diversity of product lines; Accountable for overall financial results for RAS; Works with volunteers to identify, develop, and promote new revenue-generating activities and open global markets for the Society’s products, especially those in emerging technologies. Position is responsible for risk management.
- Guides the development and availability of RAS assets so that assets are appropriately archived, quality checked, priced, and accessible to serve a worldwide audience
- Effectively partners with volunteers to deliver on RAS mission and to support the overall mission of the IEEE
- Fosters member-centric technical communities and extends their reach into emerging technology areas. Ensure excellence in communications to members and volunteers, as well as staff.
- Leads, develops, and supervises up to 5 reports, as well as various temporary hires or independent contractors as required. Manages staff including performance reviews, goal setting, hiring, training, and mentoring.
- Ensures excellence in implementation of strategic, operational, and financial planning, determined by the executive and administrative committees of the society; actively provides/seeks advice and counsel to/from volunteers and professional staff leaders
- Visibly leads a Society-wide commitment to legal and regulatory compliance and embodies the highest caliber of ethical behavior
- Partners internally with IEEE Entities/Programs and external organizations on strategic initiatives, including Future Directions Initiatives and outreach to new audiences (such as corporations and entrepreneurs). Helps to mentor other EDs on specific skills and knowledge areas
- Makes decisions concerning day-to-day business and staff operations
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience Business/Engineering certifications required
- Master's or other advanced degree and demonstrated technical competence in the areas of robotics and automation and/or science/technical fields preferred
- 10-15 years cumulative work experience
- Increasingly responsible management experience and excellent leadership qualities
- Demonstrated management experience including financial responsibility for an operating unit, strategic planning, organizational development, and management of a department-level staff group including HR processes
- Supervision and development of a multi-disciplinary staff of at least 3 persons
- Effective negotiation skills involving financial, contract, and policy matters
- Demonstrable skills in the sale and marketing of intellectual property products, conferences, exhibitions, or educational products
- Must have polished presentation skills and capable of both informative and persuasive speech before audiences comprised of staff, volunteers, media, industry leaders, and the public, that range in size from 10 to 1,000+.
- Creating and sustaining effective relationships among diverse entities and process continuity in an environment in which volunteer leadership changes often
- Technologically savvy knowledge worker who seeks out technology solutions to business challenges
- Capacity to work within the guidelines of materials and procedures such as governing documents such as Constitutions, Bylaws, Operating Manuals, as well as regulatory documents, contracts, legal reports, financial reports, budgets, and trends analyses or the ability to come up to speed on same quickly
- Must possess valid travel credentials (e.g., passport) Post will include required to travel minimally 15% of the time, some of which will be international in nature.
- Prior association management experience or equivalent will be preferred as well as working knowledge of publishing, conference/event management, and membership (retention, development, and strategy)
- Prior knowledge of robotics and automation areas of interest and emerging technologies is preferred
- Previous experience in change management, business scaling, or new product development
- Interest and demonstrated capacity to learn and be able to discuss new business areas or technical industries
- Industry Sector Licenses and Certifications such as ASAE Certified Association Executive (CAE), Project Management Professional, Six Sigma, etc.
- Demonstrated management skills in a volunteer led organization and strong consensus building skills
