Position Description
The Boston College International Studies (IS) Program invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of the Practice, in contemporary political, cultural, or human geography. This is a full-time, non-tenure-track position with a renewable three-year contract. The specific area of expertise is open, but it should be international or global in scope and centered outside the United States. We seek a candidate who can contribute to the IS Program and the Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences by providing excellent teaching informed by scholarship, engaged advising and mentoring to the diverse students in the IS Program, and service across the university.

The International Studies Program offers a flexible and rigorous interdisciplinary undergraduate major and minor in the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences that develops keen analytical skills and ethical reasoning amidst complex global dynamics. With approximately four hundred majors and minors, and twenty-seven affiliated full-time faculty, the IS Program offers robust opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and scholarly engagement. See the IS Program website for more information about curricula, faculty, and campus activities.

The teaching load will be the equivalent of three undergraduate courses per semester. One of the core responsibilities will be to teach the required introductory course “Where on Earth: Foundations in Political Geography” to approximately 100 incoming IS majors in the sophomore class each Fall semester; this counts as two courses toward the teaching load.  Other, smaller, undergraduate courses in the faculty member’s area of expertise will be determined in consultation with the IS Program Director; they must be suitable for IS majors and/or minors, but most will also be open to undergraduates across the university. The faculty member will also serve on the IS Academic Advisory Board, advise undergraduate majors, and supervise a small number of IS senior thesis projects each year as needed.

This appointment will begin in July 2022, with teaching duties beginning mid-August 2022.

Position Qualifications

A Ph.D. in geography or related field is required and must be conferred before August 31, 2022. Candidates must show evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching and a developing record of scholarly activity in their field.

Application Instructions
Applicants must submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, three letters of reference, a teaching statement (describing your teaching approach and experience), a diversity statement (describing your experience with and approach to diversity, equity and inclusion in the classroom) and syllabi from courses taught and/or proposed, via Interfolio (apply.interfolio.com/96033) by December 15, 2021. After an initial review, selected candidates will be invited to submit further materials, including an article or conference-length writing sample and evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching. First-round interviews will be conducted via video-conference; finalists will interview on  campus.
