Job Description Summary

The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture ( APLA ) at Auburn University, a comprehensive land-grant and research institution, seeks candidates for two full-time tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professors for appointment in the Landscape Architecture Programs with teaching responsibilities centered in design studio and one or more of the specialized topic areas indicated below, commencing August 2022.

The Auburn Landscape Architecture Programs are research-informed, design-led programs dedicated to training quality designers, addressing contemporary issues, and participating in critical landscape discourse. Grounded in the state of Alabama, we focus attention on places where the richness, complexity, and messiness of landscape is prominently felt, including post-industrial cities, infrastructural landscapes, rural landscapes, and coasts. Our curriculum places special emphasis on practices of fieldwork, landscape advocacy, and design research. At the end of our programs, students have the opportunity to work within the Alabama Lab, our design research lab.
We offer both an undergraduate degree ( BLA ) and a graduate degree ( MLA ). The first class of BLA students began their studies in August 2021. Successful candidates will contribute to the critical development and direction of this new BLA program as well as the continued refinement and improvement of the MLA program.

In addition to the BLA and MLA, our School also offers three allied degree programs: Bachelor of Architecture, Bachelor of Interior Architecture, and Bachelor of Environmental Design. APLA resides in the College of Architecture, Design, and Construction along with the McWhorter School of Building Science and the School of Industrial + Graphic Design. Opportunities for collaboration within the School, College, and broader University abound. We participate in a legacy of engaged public interest design work exemplified by our School’s two off-campus centers: Rural Studio (Hale County, Alabama) and Urban Studio (Birmingham, Alabama), as well as our College’s futures studio (Mobile, Alabama).

The Landscape Architecture Programs seeks two candidates with a strong interest in teaching design studio and the ability to teach core courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level in one or more of the following areas of our curriculum:

1.) History, Theory, & Practice (with an emphasis on contemporary landscape theory; spatial justice; history of American, African, Asian, or Oceanic landscapes; and/or landscape aesthetics)
2.) Graphic Studies (with an emphasis on visual communication, digital media workflows, landscape simulation and/or design
computation)

Our studio sequences are structured to facilitate the development of sophisticated design practices by our students, with focus on site reading, form-making in relationship to aesthetic experience, and the systemic implications of design projects. Landscape advocacy, beginning design, material experimentation, and urban design are particular areas of need within the studio curriculum. As our Programs expand, we anticipate opportunities to build off-campus studio programs, both locally and abroad, and welcome applicants with interest in participating in that curricular development.

Responsibilities of appointments include teaching, service, and research. Successful candidates will demonstrate the capacity to maintain an active scholarly program disseminated through appropriate disciplinary venues. APLA faculty engage in and are supported in a broad range of formats for research and creative work. We are looking for hands-on collaborators who can participate in shaping a critical landscape pedagogy with us, either by building on our existing focal areas or by diversifying our expertise.
