Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as a Lecturer I -3 year appointment, renewable based on favorable evaluations, of School of Art & Design in the Design area beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is seeking applications in the School of Art & Design, for a Lecturer I to teach in both campuses (Brownsville & Edinburg) fulltime non-tenure-eligible appointment beginning September 2022 in the Graphic Design area in service to our newly designed curriculum emphasizing the full spectrum of visual communication design in emerging media. This position will serve undergraduate students in the new BFA Graphic Design and contribute to the School of Art's MFA program. The visual communication design area is seeking candidates with the following credentials:
Applicants must have earned a Master of Fine Arts degree (MFA), MDes, or MA in a related field with applicable professional experience is required in Graphic Design, Visual Communications Design, IXD or related field from an accredited university by starting date. Applicants must present evidence of potential to effectively teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels.The Candidate will help develop and teach courses for undergraduate VCDG majors within the full spectrum of Visual Communication Design: Graphic Design, Typography, Packaging, Systems Design, Branding/Advertising, Illustration, Interaction Design (IXD), User Experience and User Interaction Design (UX/UI), Information Graphics, Product Design, and Sustainable Design, or other courses related to the candidate's specialty. This might range from introductory courses on design principles and techniques, to advanced studio courses focusing on methodology and concept development in complex problems. Lecturers are teaching focuses with a lessor requirement for service and research. The successful candidate will be given the standard academic teaching load for lecturer faculty, 80% workload effort. Assignments will be determined by the School of Art & Design Director and/or Dean of the College of Fine Arts. The chosen candidate may teach courses such as:
  • VCDG Digital Foundations 1&2: Design Software (Illustrator/InDesign/Photoshop)
  • Design Process (basic Graphic Design/Vis.Com. Intro)
  • Typography 1
  • Another Visual Communication Course related to the candidate's area of expertise

    School of Art & Design/Graphic Design area Background
    The UTRGV School of Art & Design is a bi-campus school, which maintains facilities in both Edinburg and Brownsville, Texas. In Edinburg it has a 73,000-square foot facility with the highest quality studios and labs in graphic design, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking, digital and film photography with a wet lab. We have 4 newly equipped Mac labs, a Wacom animation lab, and a maker space equipped with large format printer, 2D and 3D printers, and laser cutter.
    The Graphic Design area at UTRGV offers a BFA in Graphic Design, and a Graduate Certificate in Graphic Design. The new curriculum under review to begin in Fall 2022 is a comprehensive scaffolded curriculum that is grounded in design and typography traditions with 2-degree concentrations: Graphic Design and New Media Design. The Graphic Design Concentration offers clusters focused on illustration, editorial/publication design, graphic design, advertising, product design and sustainable design. The New Media Design offers clusters in Animation, Mobile Ap Design and Emerging Media.
    Currently School of Art & Design is comprised of 6 area and has roughly 600 students, with 400 design majors, this is the fastest growing area in the arts and our school. The Graphic Design area is incorporating more interdisciplinary collaborations such as STEAM programs, Fine Art collaborations, and community service projects. We currently have 12 faculty with 7 full-time faculty members. As we seek to continue to expand our offerings that support our students and growing numbers, we are recruiting faculty with strong experience in design and visual technologies. Our design students have recently won several medals in regional, national, and international competitions such as the American Advertising Federation (Addy) local and regional competitions, National Student Show and Conference (NSSC), and Adobe Jam Mobile App competitions.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Masters (MA) degree from an accredited institution; preferably with a focus on Graphic Design/Visual Communication Design or related concentration and significant professional or industry experience.

    · A body of work that demonstrates expertise Graphic Design/Visual Communication Design, and/or Interaction Design.

    · Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university/college level.

    Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
    A familiarity with the full spectrum of Graphic Design/Visual Communication Design disciplines, and the following software is desired: Adobe Creative Suite, some experience with coding HTML, CSS Mobile App development is a plus. Experience in professional studios, corporations, and advertising agencies, as well as online course development, and teaching is a plus.



    Preferred Qualification:

    MFA in Visual Communication Design, or MDes or related terminal degree, from an accredited institution. Teaching experience at the college/university level, professional experience in design or related industry supporting knowledge of creating compelling visual communications and the tool of Industry standard software: Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, XD, Dimensions, Blender, After Effects, Premiere Pro, and other applicable software. Ability to teach all levels of undergraduate courses in visual communication design, typography, interaction design, and related design disciplines. · Experience developing and teaching online or hybrid courses.

    · Demonstrated knowledge of critical thinking and visual literacy, emerging media.

    · Three years of college-level teaching experience beyond TA work.

    Additional Information:
    UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
    require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
    performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
    and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
    §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
    Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
    135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
    Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
    and at least 135 days in length.
