Job Description
The Editor is the primary copyeditor for a wide range of materials in support of communications and marketing, alumni engagement, and development goals in the Advancement division at Virginia Tech. The Editor is an integral part of University Relations’ Editorial Content Strategy team, which operates under the direction of the Executive Editor and assists with university-wide editorial oversight for a variety of platforms. The Editor works in a dynamic, digital-first environment, editing and improving content generated by colleagues in University Relations and in the colleges and units across the university; coordinating a wide variety of editorial projects; and writing original content. The Editors work will directly influence a variety of platforms, including the VTx website for news and video, the Virginia Tech Magazine, and more. The ideal candidate will have the ability to edit and copyedit in a variety of writing styles; problem-solve, both individually and as part of a project team; work independently with minimal guidance; and be a motivated self-starter.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing, or a related discipline and related work experience in a communications field.
Demonstrated editing and copyediting experience in a communications field.
General knowledge of/experience working with style guides, including AP style.
Strong verbal and written communications skills.
Ability to work individually and within a team environment, alongside writers, editors, photographers, designers, video producers, marketers, stakeholders, and more, in order to accomplish objectives.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing, or a related discipline.
Prior editing and copyediting experience with a variety of communications including magazines.
Knowledge of printing industry practices.
Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.
Experience working in a content management system.
Experience in a higher education or other academic environment.
Experience with content production and measuring the effectiveness of communications.
