Job Description

The College of Design, Construction and Planning (DCP) at the University of Florida (UF) invites applications for a 12-month, tenure-track, Program Director and Assistant Professor position in the Historic Preservation Program . The position is available from Spring 2022.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: management of the Historic Preservation Program including strategic planning, preparation of annual reports, contributing information for letters of evaluation for participating faculty, managing historic preservation research, organizing curriculum and course staffing, budgeting, student outreach and engagement, and directing the Program’s public outreach efforts. The Director is responsible for managing established field programs in St. Augustine and Nantucket and will also work with the College’s development team to seek external support for the Program and its students.

The chosen candidate will teach courses that are informed by, and further, their research agenda. Teaching responsibilities of the position also include advising graduate and doctoral theses, participating in the development of the Historic Preservation course sequence, and serving on academic committees. The position will require applicants to contribute to academic and professional service, while they maintain an active scholarship agenda that comprises both peer-reviewed research and externally funded research.

For purposes of tenure and promotion the successful candidate will hold an appointment in the department or school in the College of Design, Construction and Planning most appropriate to their professional and academic qualifications. The Director will be expected to collaborate with faculty in other disciplines in the College.

The Historic Preservation Program

The University of Florida Master of Historic Preservation (UF MHP) degree encompasses an interdisciplinary study of the basic and applied skills in historic preservation, architectural conservation, anthropology, archeology, architecture, building construction, cultural tourism, history, interior design, landscape architecture, museum studies, and urban and regional planning. The Program regularly contracts with local municipalities and state and federal agencies to undertake a range of historic preservation services and research including, among others, cultural resource surveys and National Historic Landmark and National Register of Historic Places nominations for districts and individual properties, including Cedar Key, Florida, Gainesville, Florida, and Nantucket, Massachusetts.

The UF Historic Preservation Program offers a Master of Historic Preservation (MHP), a Ph.D. concentration in Historic Preservation, a combined 4+1 Bachelor of Science in Sustainability and the Built Environment and MHP, and a Certificate in Historic Preservation. Faculty are drawn from disciplines across the College of Design, Construction and Planning.

The College of Design, Construction and Planning

Established in 1925, DCP is a preeminent College of Design, Construction, and Planning. Required Qualifications:

Professional or post-professional graduate degree in historic preservation (e.g. Master of Historic Preservation) or other related fields such as Cultural Heritage, Architectural Conservation, Conservation of Archeological and Ethnographic materials, Material culture, Anthropology and American Studies.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. is highly desirable, as is previous teaching experience, peer-reviewed research (peer-reviewed publications, funded research, and other forms of scholarship), and/or professional experience. Candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills.

The successful candidate must be able to work with students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
