DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Department of Humanities and Religious Studies offers an integrated approach to the study of world cultures across history. In our courses, students undertake an interdisciplinary study of core ideas, ideals, and values.

Religious Studies focuses on the beliefs and practices of the world's religions and their relationship to history and culture.

The study of the Humanities can be a profoundly personal experience, yet students acquire the concrete analytical, research, writing, and organizational skills essential to their professional careers.

POSITION DETAILS:

The ideal candidate for this joint appointment in the Department of Humanities and Religious Studies (75%) and the Department of History (25%) will have expertise in pre-modern Chinese history and culture, including religion, and facility with appropriate languages. The candidate should be able to employ discipline-specific methodologies in approaching various aspects of culture over time, including religion. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated competence in other areas of Asia more broadly, and both departments also are interested in candidates who demonstrate the potential to suitably increase teaching competence in such areas.

JOB DUTIES:
  • Teaching assignments may include the following existing courses:
    • lower-division survey courses on Asian cultures, including HRS 70 (Arts and Ideas of Asia: Ancient to Medieval) and HRS 71 (Arts and Ideas of Asia: Medieval to Modern);
    • upper-division courses in East Asian history and cultures, including HIST 148A (China: Antiquity to 1600 AD), HIST 148B (China: 1600 to Present), HRS 171 (Introduction to the East Asian World), HRS 172 (The Classical Culture of China), HRS 173 (Chinese Philosophy and Religion), HRS 175 (Zen Buddhism and Daoism), and HRS 176 (The Confucian Tradition).
  • Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in areas of interest
  • Engaging in scholarly and professional activities
  • Providing service to the department, college, campus, and community
  • Advise undergraduate and graduate students

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • PhD in pre-modern Chinese history and culture, including religion, or a related field. ABD will be considered. If ABD, degree requirements must be completed by August 2022.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with relevant languages
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Chinese history, Asian cultures survey courses, courses on Chinese religions and philosophies using discipline-specific methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to work effectively with a diverse undergraduate and graduate student population.
  • Demonstrated ability or potential for teaching and research excellence.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated sub-competencies in other areas of Asia, including potential to increase teaching competence
  • Experience and skills that would allow them to contribute to the campus's anchor university and anti-racism initiatives.

Applicants should demonstrate in their materials the following: the ability to work effectively with a diverse student population, consciously antiracist priorities, evidence of skills, and specific experience with taking an inclusive approach to teaching, scholarship and community service. Applicants should also highlight any experience and skills that would allow them to contribute to the campus's anchor university initiative.

  1. letter of interest;
  2. CV/Resume
  3. Diversity statement: statement of pedagogy, including evidence of how the candidate has addressed or plans to address diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism in their classrooms;
  4. transcripts indicating degree completion related to required qualifications
  5. three (3) letters of recommendation (combined into one file prior to upload)**;
  6. a statement of research goals.

In all these materials, especially in those dealing with interests and pedagogy, we encourage candidates to discuss specific tools created or programs worked with in order to: enable the success of underrepresented students; explicitly promote anti-racist attitudes and practices; incorporate scholars of color and other minority groups in academic discourse; and explain specific ways that they plan to build connections with the local community.
