HCC is recruiting for a Mechanic III to join the Facilities team in Columbia, MD. Under general supervision of the MEP Supervisor and Building Maintenance Supervisor, performs routine repairs and maintenance on college owned equipment and systems including but limited to electrical, plumbing, mechanical and HVAC. To provide an environment that is comfortable, safe, healthy and conducive to teaching, learning and working.

WORK PERFORMED

  • Perform routine daily inspections and maintenance of equipment assigned.
  • Will be required to use the preventive maintenance system while preforming daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal and annual inspections of HVAC equipment to maintain complete records.
  • Maintain electrical, HVAC, mechanical equipment and control systems appropriately.
  • Reads, understands and interprets blueprints, drawings, floor plans, schedules and manufacturers operating and/or maintenance specifications as they relate to electrical , mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and special equipment, building structures and finishes.
  • Maintains and performs repairs, modifications, replacements and installations on a wide variety of heavy duty air conditioning, ventilation equipment, centrifugal chillers, refrigeration equipment and control systems to include pneumatic, electrical, electronic, direct digital and host computer control systems for both existing facilities and those under renovation.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance work to include operating, cleaning, inspecting, troubleshooting, adjusting, calibrating, testing, tightening, replacing, lubricating, reporting problems, and other similar tasks on a wide variety of heavy duty air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • May be called upon to assist other maintenance personnel in the completion of their work to include Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Maintenance Technicians, Sheet Metal Workers, and others.
  • Responds to requests for maintenance and service from building occupants to include emergencies, maintenance problems, requested installations, modifications, tests, calibrations, evaluations, repairs, adjustments, and other similar tasks.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directly by Division management and supervision.
  • Acts in role of essential personnel for emergencies.
  • Performs preventive maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Performs shutdown and startup of mechanical systems.
  • Performs tasks in various trades assigned and scheduled by the supervisor to maintain college buildings and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in commercial and industrial systems.
  • Strong back ground with commercial and industrial equipment.
  • Ability to weld, braise, solder and use a acetylene-cutting torch.
  • High School Diploma, and/or accredited Trade school or Apprenticeship.
  • Electric, Electronic and Pneumatic DDC controls.
  • Central plant equipment.
  • Split systems and package units.
  • Ability to make quick decisions under stress.
  • Class D motor vehicle license.
  • OSHA Safety Regulations
  • Physical strength and stamina to perform heavy physical tasks for long periods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Regular attendance is a requirement of this job.
  • Performs all duties while considering the impact of any actions on the college's sustainability initiatives in the areas of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic prosperity.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work inside and out in extremes of temperature, humidity and inclement weather.
  • Work in mechanical rooms, spaces and tunnels where conditions will be dirty, dusty and sometimes wet and muddy.
  • Work in close proximity to electrical transformers and switchgear with voltage in excess of 13,000 volts.
  • Many facets of job require physical strength and stamina to perform heavy tasks for long periods of time.
  • May be subject to being on call, carrying beeper, cell phone or two-way radio, working with hazardous materials, schedule changes based on the needs of the College and long hours to complete/perform scheduled or emergency functions/projects.
  • Work in high places on roofs or ladders and on scaffolds.
  • The use of personal protective clothing and equipment
  • Work overtime and call-in, as requested.

Additional Information:

Hours Per Week: 40 hours per week
Work Schedule: 1st shit - 8:00 am to 5 pm
Compensation: $24.38 ($50,905/yr) plus excellent medical & dental insurance, tuition reimbursement and paid leave
Grade: 11
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

As a participating member of the Maryland Retirement and Pension System, HCC offers two retirement options: The Pension, which requires a 7% employee contribution and The ORP, a 403(b) with a 7.25% employer contribution only.
