The School of Medicine Dean's Office has an exciting opportunity for an individual who is seeking to join our fiscal team as a Financial Specialist. This position provides the opportunity for career and professional growth within the financial job family. This position works closely with School of Medicine Executive Leadership on financial strategy and analysis.

This position assists in developing the budget and monitors spending in accordance with the state, university and school policies and procedures for the School of Medicine departments/units. The incumbent ensures accurate and timely processing and approval of financial transactions, completes monthly reconciliations, completes procurement activities, identifies funding issues through the review of expenditure variances against budget, and ensures the correct application of internal controls. Position requires attention to detail, ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, effective interpersonal skills, critical thinking and analytical skills and high levels of initiative and self-motivation.

This position would be eligible for a hybrid remote work arrangement.

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field and/or equivalent years of education and experience. 3 or more years of experience working within finance/budget operations. Knowledge of financial management and fundamental accounting principles and practices. Proficient using Excel to extract and present financial data. Experience managing and reconciling financial transactions in a timely manner. Demonstrated ability to set priorities and work with minimal supervision. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively in a busy office setting. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Proficiency with general office software applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
Excellent verbal/written communication and customer service skills required.

Preferred Education and Experience
Candidates should possess the ability to analyze financial transactions for variances and to create ad hoc reports.
Experience in budget development, expense forecasting, financial reconciliation, and the ability to interpret and apply complex government regulations will be preferred.
Systems experience in Banner, RealSource, Chrome River, SAS, ARMICS, and familiarity with university policies surrounding procurement activities.
