Position Information

This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Special working conditions: Overtime maybe required for special projects and/or emergencies.

Employment is contingent upon the candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift up in excess of 50 lbs.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The salary range for this classification is $5,742 - $7,414 monthly.

Major Duties

Under general supervision, the Plumber is responsible for the full range of skilled plumbing work including but not limited to the installation, maintenance, inspection, modification, remodel, and repair of mechanical plumbing equipment and automated plumbing systems. Incumbents typically maintain, troubleshoot, and test plumbing systems; assemble and install valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of a variety of metals and materials; inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements, and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations. The Plumber may provide instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

High school diploma or its equivalent with any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard plumber's apprenticeship program.

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required experience a minimum of five (5) years continuous experience in the plumbing field. Backflow certification and apprenticeship program training leading to a journeymen level of experience and knowledge.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge:
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the plumbing trade
- Base knowledge of the operation of building automation systems
- Thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations pertaining to the plumbing trade, including the California State Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety and the California State Plumbing codes.
- Fundamentals of cross-connection control

Abilities:
- Perform skilled plumbing work on all applicable equipment and systems
- Perform applicable welding work
- Obtain necessary backflow prevention licenses
- Make rough sketches of plumbing installations
- Read and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications
- Estimate materials and labor cost of standard plumbing maintenance and repair work
- Maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems
- Provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants
- Analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations
- Prepare standard reports
- Read and write at the level appropriate to the position, and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position

Certification: Valid driver license

Responsibilities

50% Troubleshoot and repair plumbing systems. Typical work includes but is not limited to lays out and assist with installing, maintaining, inspecting, and repairing standard plumbing equipment and fixtures used in water, gas, steam, sewage, and other related plumbing systems. Installing, repairing, and troubleshooting plumbing-related equipment and systems; maintaining campus swimming pool plumbing; and seeing the safety rules are observed.

30% Perform preventative maintenance on plumbing, natural gas, domestic water, sanitary sewer, and storm drain system. Work with a small crew of plumbers and helpers, provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.

10% Estimate materials and job cost for plumbing and prepare working sketches. Maintain plumbing shop tools and equipment, order materials and parts. Estimating, scheduling, and inventory control. Maintain records and assist in the updating of piping on campus blueprints.

5% May be assigned water treatment duties that include monitoring, testing, and chemically treating the campus swimming pools and water supply to maintain an acceptable chlorination level.

5% Other duties as assigned.
