Department Information

 Student Financial Services (SFS) is a comprehensive provider of financial aid and student employment services to prospective and current students, parents of students, and alumni. Student Financial Services assures compliance with federal and state regulations for eligibility of financial aid and administration of financial aid programs.

 Description of Job

 The CSU Pueblo Works Financial Counselor is the primary provider of customer service to students seeking work-related financial support at CSU Pueblo, and will serve as a student-facing position that also has operational duties related to Works financial assistance and financial reporting. This position is stationed in the financial aid office and will work closely with the operations specialist overseeing student employment. This position will answer inquiries from prospective and current students by telephone, walk in visits, and e-mail.  As such this position is intended to be in-person and on campus.  The person in this position will work to connect students interested in paid on-campus and off-campus work opportunities with those funding opportunities that best meet their needs, interest, and financial eligibility. This position will be responsible for being knowledgeable about the types of work funds at CSU Pueblo (i.e., work study, hourly, Works) and helping determine which funding source best serves the student, based off their financial information. This person will provide student information via live presentations and traditional work station communication methods. In addition to direct student service, this position will be responsible for creating and monitoring reports essential to connecting students with these various types of work funds. This position will also serve as a liaison with Business Financial Services and will be responsible for performing all reconciliation duties between the financial aid system (Banner), federal Common Origination and Disbursement website, and the Kuali Financial System.  It will also create and maintain records needed for drawdowns from external fund sources, yearly federal closeouts, state utilization reports and annual expenditure report.

This is a grant funded position, renewable annually, based on budgetary approvals and renewal of Vision programs 


Primary Duties

Student Service – Advise current and prospective students and families on all aspects of student work aid programs and provide determinations regarding student eligibility for various work programs. This includes application review, Banner, Kuali, and troubleshooting issues and conflicting information.  The position holder will meet with students to inform them of the application process and requirements and will advise students about financial aid eligibility and eligibility for various work programs and other financial aid related matters. While counseling students, this position will be required to adhere to federal laws, regulations and policies concerning federal student aid.

Reporting and Reconciliation 

  • Maintain reports regarding all available student work funding pools, student eligibility determinations, and award processes. 
  • Facilitate reconciliation between the financial aid awarding system (Banner) and the accounting system (Kuali) in support of drawdowns from external funders, as well as regularly-required funding reports. 
  • Ensure compliance with program guidelines and all applicable state and federal requirements.


  • Develop and maintain solid working relationships with campus partners involved in student employment efforts, including the Career Center, Works Coordinator, SFS Student Employment, BFS/Accounting, and Payroll. 
  • Leverage partnerships to build and sustain processes that benefit student work efforts and contribute to efficiency.

Education and Awareness

  • Increase awareness of student work funding opportunities, application processes, eligibility, and regulations, and their relationship to academic and enrollment policies and procedures. 
  • Participate in various meetings, awareness activities and informational sessions in support of Works and other employment activities as well as general Financial Aid events.


Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to appropriately handle and maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive student and family financial information
  • Ability to work normal hours of operation and additional hours as business necessitates. Hours may include evening and/or weekends
  • Ability to work effectively and tactfully with students, parents, and the public
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office products
  • Previous experience in a position that required exceptional customer service
  • Experience with financial reporting or accounting principles

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree 
  • Knowledge of financial aid, debt management and/or credit counseling experience
  • Evidence of ability to identify problems including research for solutions and/or answers
  • Significant computer knowledge in order to read, analyze and prepare documents
  • Experience with Banner financial aid and Kuali accounting
  • Previous experience working in higher education and/or financial aid or student employment
