Job Summary:
The Department of Media Studies at the University of San Francisco invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin Fall 2022, contingent upon funding approval. This position seeks scholars who specialize in transnational media cultures and media production. The department is particularly interested in scholars who are also media-makers and who demonstrate experience in creative media production, including audio production practices (podcasting, sound installation, museum audio tours, audio for gaming, or film mixing) or video production practices (narrative production, documentary production, video installation, gaming, motion graphics, etc.).

The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to situating questions surrounding media production and media-making within their historical, theoretical, and critical contexts, considering the impact of platforms, media cultures, cultural identities, and sociopolitical and economic formations on the production and circulation of media. The department will prioritize candidates who emphasize transnationalism, internationalism, gender and racialization in their approaches to both media-making and media analysis. Possible areas of expertise may include screen studies (including regional and trans-local studies); transnational media production; platformization; media histories in relation to colonization, race/ethnicity, class, gender and sexuality.

Full Job Description:

Job Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to teach three or four of the following core undergraduate classes offered by the department: Introduction to Media Studies, Multi-Media Storytelling, Media History, Cultural Industries, Civic Media, Introduction to Video Production, Introduction to Audio Production, Media Theory & Criticism, and Media Research; as well as courses in their area of research interest that would contribute to the overall direction of the major. The expected teaching load for this position at USF is two 4-unit courses per semester with an additional third course every fourth semester (2-2-2-3 over two years). In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to engage in service to the department and college, and maintain an active research program that potentially engages students.

Minimum Qualifications: A PhD in media studies, communication, cultural studies, or a closely related field is required by the start of the appointment (no later than August 2022). A strong record of teaching at the university level, evidence of scholarship, evidence of media production and/or creative work, and an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University of San Francisco are required.
