Position Summary and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Associate VP for Creative Direction, the Web Designer designs, builds, and maintains Vassar's websites. The Web Designer works collaboratively with College constituencies (offices, departments, programs) to assess needs and goals, maintain content currency, and develop new content according to the style guidelines.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Site design and development.
  • Evaluate and improve the content structure of a site. This includes page layout, information architecture, and wayfinding mechanisms.
  • Maintain current knowledge on industry trends, conventions, and best practices for visual design, site accessibility, and overall web development.
  • Update site content as needed.
  • Explore and familiarize with new technologies and systems (Drupal, WordPress, SCSS, jQuery, etc.).
  • Ensure Vassar's websites are professional and engaging.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four to seven years of related experience preferred.
  • Strong visual skills. Specifically, an understanding of how colors mix and interact, typography and layouts and grid. This includes knowledge of which fonts are legible, what typography is suitable for a specific project, how fonts impact the design as a whole and how to place elements on a site so they’re findable, usable, and understandable.
  • Knowledge of what makes a website usable and accessible.
  • Working knowledge of the following languages: HTML, Javascript, CSS/SCSS, PHP
  • Working knowledge of Drupal and WordPress
  • Ability to design sustainably: building sites so that they’re extensible, and code/principles from one project can be applied to future projects.
