Counselor - GEAR UP Project - North Alpine School District

Position Category: Staff - Full-Time

Summary:
GEAR UP is seeking an individual that is passionate about helping students. Duties include:Develop and manage a college readiness program for low-income high school students, including those who are first generation and underrepresented. Recruit eligible low-income students to meet required program numbers. GEAR UP specific activities include: Counsels with students and parents to develop an individualized strengths-based intake summary and education plan, and provides customized services based on that plan. Develops and implements activities and programs, based on the statewide GEAR UP grant, to assist students in successfully graduating high school, preparing for and attending college. Monitors academic progress, by tracking attendance and GPA, and provides feedback and assistance to students. Activities include but are not limited to workshops and events with individuals and in groups. May serve on appropriate policy and advisory committees. Hires, trains, and supervises GEAR UP part-time employees. Required Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a master’s degree in Counseling & Guidance, Educational Psychology, Social Work, or related Social Science field and two years of full-time professional employment related to the Summary of Duties.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of low-income, minority, and at-risk high school and college student populations.
  • Knowledge of rapport-building techniques.
  • Knowledge of educational and employment problems of special groups including low­ income and at-risk youth, minorities, non-native English speakers, and those with learning or physical disabilities
  • Knowledge of adolescent development.
  • Knowledge of labor market characteristics and variety of occupations and industries.
  • Knowledge of variety of computer software applications.
  • Knowledge of high school, two-year college program, and traditional four-year college graduation requirements.
  • Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion and how to support students of diverse identities, backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities.
  • Knowledge of social media and current trends in effective youth outreach.
  • Skills in academic counseling, career guidance, high school student retention and graduation strategies, college-readiness strategies, scholarship awareness and first­ generation college student preparation.
  • Skills in academic and outreach program development. Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and public­ relations skills.
  • Experience in recruiting strategies for students and parents.
  • Experience in rapport-building techniques.
  • Skill in data tracking, record keeping, writing reports, and maintaining student and staff records.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with other personnel, partners, and external parties.
  • Ability to create presentations and present them effectively and professionally to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to receive feedback and implement changes as needed.
  • Ability to supervise and lead other individuals.
  • Ability to work independently on a multi-task level and prioritize and follow projects and assignments through to completion in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities and a high-stress environment.
  • Ability to network with various student-sponsoring agencies and programs.
  • Ability to travel both within and out of state; drive state vehicle.
  • Ability to work remotely, if needed, including a dedicated workspace without interruptions and equipment and meet all university remote work expectations.




Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social science, or a related field AND two years’ experience related to the summary of duties with at least one of those years counseling at-risk students. Be able to meet with students at school, in their homes, and at other locations, as needed, both during normal working hours and on evenings and weekends. Be able to drive provided state car when needed. If a state car is not available, be able to drive your own vehicle. Will supervise a number of part-time GEAR UP employees.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to drive provided state car when needed. If a state car is not available, be able to drive own vehicle.

Ability to sit for extended period of time as well as operate office equipment and handle basic office supplies.

Pay Range: $42,905 - $53,631
