Bard Graduate Center (BGC), located on West 86th Street in New York City, seeks a skilled, proactive, dependable Digital Humanities Educational Technologist. Reporting to the Director of Digital Humanities and Digital Exhibitions, the Digital Humanities Educational Technologist will provide widespread support for digital initiatives at BGC. The right candidate will enjoy being part of BGC’s flourishing community of students, faculty, curators, research fellows, and staff members. Bard Graduate Center is an interdisciplinary graduate research institute studying the cultural history of the material world. Our students gravitate to careers in museums, academia, the art world, and publishing.

Responsibilities:

Curriculum and Course support: Including:

  • Manage and update the institution’s course management platform and course related assets. Responsibilities include: assisting faculty and students with queries and account issues; holding regular workshops on the use of the platform; update and maintenance of training materials and documentation; consultation with faculty to develop and further leverage the platform for teaching and learning, and the archive and preservation of past course sites.
  • Act as a resource for discovering, organizing and publishing digital assets and collections for use in courses and projects.
  • Design and implement technology-related development resources for faculty, students, and staff, including workshops, one-on one training, and online material. 
  • Advise and consult in the design, development and integration of information technology services for teaching and research.
  • Offer strategic advice in discussions of BGC's long-term digital approach.
  • Participate in cross-departmental working group to evaluate, research and implement an institutional digital asset management solution. 
  • Investigate and evaluate current teaching technologies and best practices.

Online Exhibitions Archive Project:

  • Assist in the production and development of BGC’s Exhibitions Archive Project, a re-curation of previous in-gallery exhibitions online which leverage the institutional and exhibitions archive. 
  • Work with the digital metadata librarian to access archived digital materials and with the design and curatorial staff to conceptualize and implement digital tools to create interactive facets of the sites, build and develop information architecture. 
  • Work with public programming to integrate new content and AIR (Artist in Residence) work into these projects. 

Digital Exhibitions/Interactives

  • Assist in the production and development of interactive elements and online exhibitions for gallery exhibitions and stand-alone projects.
  • General DH/DX support as needed.

Required Experience

  • Digital Humanist with strong academic experience and digital tool skill set.   
  • PhD or Masters degree with focus in digital technology or related discipline
  • Applicants with extensive experience in web-based project development and management will be considered.
  • 3-5 years of professional work experience in education technology; 
  • Thorough knowledge of Wordpress management and development;
  • Extensive experience developing web sites and implementing graphic design work on the web;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Experience working with clients/customers on complex projects;
  • Interpersonal and team building skills; 
  • Creative problem solving abilities and initiatives;
  • Comfortable and competent working with the following client-based operating systems: Apple Mac and iOS, MS Windows, and Android.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience providing formal instruction, preferably at the college level;
  • Experience working with faculty and students in a higher education institution;
  • Experience with the development of e-learning tools.
  • Knowledge of art history, decorative arts history, or material culture;
  • Experience developing dynamic websites with CSS, XHTML, XML, JavaScript, and Ajax;
  • Familiarity working with PHP and relational databases (i.e. MySQL, SQLite);
  • Experience with web browser/client side of standards such as: HTML, CSS, XML, DHTML, JavaScript, Ajax, and other evolving standards;
  • Experience with image editing software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and Fireworks image file formats.
  • Experience designing graphical elements for web applications;
  • Knowledge of and ability to use still and video cameras;
  • Experience with Adobe Premiere or Avid digital video editing software;
  • Experience with Audio Editing software (DAWs) such as Logic Pro, GarageBand, Pro Tools;
  • Experience creating rapid prototypes for projects;
  • Experience evaluating the usability of web user interfaces;
