In collaboration with and reporting to the Vice President for Government Relations and Community Engagement and coordinating with other University leaders, develops and manages University strategy for strengthening relationships with federal elected officials and government agencies and increasing their understanding of and support for Syracuse University through programmatic and research initiatives. Works with University leadership to identify and execute on priority legislative and government relations issues for the University. Represents Syracuse University with media and communications partners relating to public policy priorities and University initiatives. Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public affairs, communications, business, or other closely related field.
  • Seven (7) plus years of experience working in government relations, communications, or other related experience
  • Successful track record of convening federal government stakeholders and facilitating effective strategies for program development and initiatives, particularly related to appropriations and higher education policy.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining relationships with public officials and their staffs.
  • Able to liaise with media/communications partners on public policy and political issues.
  • Skilled at analyzing and interpreting legislation and policy documents, as well as experience with legislative and regulatory advocacy, negotiation, and persuasion.
  • Highly skilled at representing the University’s goals and priorities to governmental and policy partners. Must have strong communications and organizational skills that support communicating stakeholders’ goals and perspectives to University leadership.
  • Ability to clearly define goals, identify effective processes and assess outcomes.
  • Effective verbal and written communicator.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Must have prior experience working with Congress and the Executive Branch, as well as non-profit and policy organizations, to create, support, and enhance the University’s impact on public policy.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and strong inter-personal skills supporting key relationships, both internal and external, with government groups and key stakeholders.
  • Must have strong communication skills to share information and plans for program initiatives and activities that support/enhance relationships with government stakeholders.
  • Must have ability to prepare a variety of written communications such as reports, testimony, and factsheets.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as with teams.
  • Track record of advancing diversity and cultivating an inclusive culture within a professional and/or educational setting.
Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with and reporting to the Vice President for Government Relations and Community Engagement and coordinating with other University leaders, develops and manages University strategy for strengthening relationships with federal elected officials and government agencies and increasing their understanding of and support for Syracuse University through programmatic and research initiatives.
  • Works with University leadership to identify and execute on priority legislative and government relations issues for the University.
  • Monitors legislation and policy activities.
  • Updates and advises University leadership and staff about relevant policy proposals and actions.
  • Works with University staff to analyze potential impacts on the institution.
  • Communicates with the University community to inform them of relevant government issues.
  • Represents Syracuse University with media and communications partners relating to public policy priorities and University initiatives.
  • In conjunction with the Vice President of Government Relations and Community Engagement, ensures alignment of federal engagement strategies, partnerships, programs, and initiatives with Academic Strategic Plan.
  • Represents Syracuse University at policy and stakeholder events and conferences.
