Position Summary

The successful candidate will teach courses in the Counseling Psychology doctoral program and the Mental Health Counseling masters program, with a typical semester load of three (3) courses as well as assisting with program management. Summer teaching opportunities may be available from year to year, contingent on student enrollment and funding availability. Clinical faculty members in our department are full-time, 9-month (academic year) faculty members who have a strong academic background, professional experience in counseling/psychotherapy, and a commitment to the development of graduate student clinicians and/or researchers. Clinical faculty members are typically renewed annually, and the clinical faculty line allows promotions in rank. As with all faculty positions in the department, clinical faculty members teach, advise students, and engage in service to the department, the University, and the profession.

About the College/Unit/Department

As the 4th largest public college of education in the country and the 3rd largest college at UGA, the Mary Frances Early College of Education ( MFE COE ) improves the lives of residents of Georgia and beyond through our instruction, research, and service. The MFE COE is a comprehensive college with disciplines focused on teacher preparation, counseling and human development, communication sciences, human movement sciences, career development, student affairs, and educational administration and policy. The Department of Counseling and Human Development Services is a nationally recognized department preparing psychologists and counseling professionals for a changing and increasingly complex world. The Counseling Psychology and Mental Health Counseling programs at The University of Georgia continue working to intentionally build programs that are anti-racist centered programs with a focus on equity and social justice. Our efforts in creating these learning communities are consistent with Counseling Psychology as a profession in “Building a Counseling Psychology of Liberation” as well as APA and MPCAC accreditation standards. Our program commitments and efforts recognize the need to dismantle systems of oppression in our programs, University, local surroundings, professions, and society. The programs aim to train students to provide culturally responsive services to BIPOC clients, clients from rural and low SES populations, LGBTQ+ clients, and clients from other underserved and marginalized populations. In addition, it is important that our students understand and provide services to clients who experience racial trauma from historical, contextual, and sociopolitical perspectives.

Counseling Psychology is the discipline responsible for teaching clinical supervision and the coursework related to the practice of psychotherapy for graduate students in Counseling Psychology and Mental Health Counseling.

Earned doctorate (Ph.D. or similar) in Counseling Psychology from an APA -accredited program earned by the start date for the position.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

• Must hold a current State of Georgia license as a psychologist or be license-eligible at the time of hire and obtain a Georgia license as a psychologist within the first year of employment.
• Must have 5 years of experience in a school or clinical setting.
• At least one year of teaching experience and clinical supervision at the graduate level.
• Clearly demonstrated focus on and commitment to a social justice, inclusion, and equity approach in the areas of teaching (e.g., courses taught), scholarship (e.g., research; professional development activities), and service and outreach (e.g., clinical activities).

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

• At least one year of experience in providing bilingual Spanish/English clinical supervision.
• At least two years of experience in providing administrative functions relevant to academic programs in counseling and psychology.
• Evidence of either sufficient scholarship or expertise in practice to support appointment with Graduate Faculty status.
• Ability and willingness to work both collaboratively and independently in a team-oriented environment
