Job Summary

Elmhurst University, a comprehensive university in the Chicago suburbs offering undergraduate and graduate programs in the liberal arts and applied sciences, invites candidates to apply for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position (starting Fall of 2022) in criminal justice. The area of expertise is open, with preference given to candidates with experience in policing or law enforcement and applied specialization such as cybercrime, investigations, or policing. Located within the department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to mentor a diverse student body as they pursue law enforcement and related careers.

Essential Functions
  • All candidates must possess a terminal degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a closely related field with evidence of teaching effectiveness.
  • Expected courses to be taught include:
    • Policing and Society, Criminal Investigations, Criminal Justice Ethics, and Research Methods on occasion.
  • Additionally, the candidate will take a holistic approach to advising undergraduate students; providing leadership in the criminal justice program; developing a productive research agenda that contributes to the discipline of criminal justice; developing working relationships with organizations to assist with internship and job placement; implementing program goals and program assessment; recruiting and retaining students; and performing departmental, university and community service.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate in Criminal Justice, Criminology, and applied experience;
  • Evidence of effective and inspiring college-level teaching;
  • Ability to teach a variety of courses within the existing Criminal Justice curriculum and develop new courses within the candidate’s area(s) of expertise, such as cybercrime
  • Demonstrated scholarship and an active research agenda in the area of Criminal Justice;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to mentor students both inside and outside of the classroom;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and
  • A commitment to shared governance and service to and for the university.
