The O’Shaughnessy is one of the Twin Cities’ premiere venues for the performing arts. While performances in its 50-year history have represented many genres, in recent years the focus has been primarily on dance companies, most led by women and artists of color. O’Shaughnessy artists represent high artistic achievement, acknowledged by critical acclaim and support by national funding organizations. The Executive Director of The O’Shaughnessy (EDOS) aligns the vision for the venue with the mission of the university, leading all strategic, curatorial, operational, business and financial initiatives. To execute the vision, theEDOScreates partnerships with faculty, students, staff that integrate the venue’s programmatic focus into academic and student life, and business arrangements that fully utilize The O’Shaughnessy and campus assets for the benefit of the university and the community-at-large. In the past four years, national artists that The O’Shaughnessy has hosted included Camille A. Brown & Dancers, Anoushka Shankar, Tori Amos, Toshi Reagon, and Arlo Guthrie. Minnesota-based artists have included Ananya Dance Theatre, TU Dance, Ragamala Dance Company, and James Sewell Ballet. Pre-COVID, The O’Shaughnessy served over 75,000 patrons annually with over 200 rehearsal or event days per year. Presentations are frequently done in collaboration with area presenters such as the Ordway, Walker Art Center, and Northrop.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Set the vision and strategic direction for the venue, in conjunction with the university’s mission, vision, values, and priorities.
- Applying the University focus to an outward stance, develop community partnerships for programming, marketing, business, fundraising, and networking opportunities.
- Create, seek and secure a variety of programming, local and national, that services both a general and campus audience, establishing the venue as an important cultural asset to the University and regional communities.
- Oversee the brand and marketing strategy, positioning The O’Shaughnessy for success in a crowded and competitive marketplace.
- Build relationships with the advisory board, funders, agents, artists, clients, and other key associates that are crucial to the venue’s fiscal and curatorial success.
- Build, manage, and maintain The O’Shaughnessy advisory committee, in compliance with Minnesota State Arts Board and university guidelines.
- Serve as the organization’s chief spokesperson to constituencies in both internal and external communities.
- Intersect with campus committees to establish The O’Shaughnessy as a cultural center of campus life.
- Lead all revenue-producing initiatives, including fund development in partnership with University Institutional Advancement, business initiatives, rentals, promoters, and sponsorships.
- Lead, manage, and provide oversight to all operational, financial, and business initiatives.
- Lead a team of theater and administrative professionals for a venue that has maintained a consistent schedule of over 200 rehearsal/event days a year and services over 75,000 patrons annually (pre-COVID)
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- Eight (8) years of arts leadership and management experience.
- Five (5) years of related experience.
- Five (5) years of curatorial experience, ideally in a major urban market.
- Experience motivating, inspiring and maintaining a highly-effective workforce.
- Experience building positive relationships with a wide variety of individuals and organizations in order to work collaboratively, innovate rapidly, and create future plans.
- Vision and passion for the performing arts.
- Organizational and administrative expertise, including budgeting, not-for-profit accounting, fiscal reporting, contract negotiation, programming, marketing, fundraising, and organizational operations of a performing arts venue.
- Respectful, welcoming, and engaging approach to people of all cultures, in a manner that affirms the worth and preserves the dignity of individuals, families, and communities.
- A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree.
- A wide range of experience in and understanding of the performing art and venue market, both locally and nationally.
- Established relationships with Twin Cities arts, funding, and business communities.
- History of effective fundraising on a local, regional and national level.
- Experience working cooperatively with a large variety of clientele, including artists, community organizations, promoters, and university departments.
