Position Summary

The Software Development product owner is responsible for continuous improvement of the software development certificate curriculum to ensure it remains relevant and addresses the evolving skills required for entry-level roles in software development. The product owner will vet all instructors for courses in the certificate program, and may at times act as a sub for courses during instructor absences. The product owner will solicit and aggregate feedback from instructors and students to ensure the curriculum provides instructors with the tools they need to help students learn, and provides a meaningful learning experience for students. The product owner should also be prepared to promote the software development certificate program with employers, at meetups and with other potential customers, as well as present on the benefits and outcomes for those who complete.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT & CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

Create and own the product road map for the software development workforce certificate(s), the courses and their content to insure its relevance to employers; at times the product owner will develop content and enhance coursework. Collaborates on the design of the technology lab environment to support evolving non-credit coursework requirements. Create executive-level presentations that communicate opportunities, status, or other high-level program information.

Research and learn new technology as needed to support the growth and expansion of IT workforce programs. Invest time required to understand the standard course templates, navigation, content, and branding formats in CSCC workforce innovation courses and support/enforce the use of these standards in content development efforts. Collaborate with other product owners to make foundational courses in certificate tracks relevant to all certificates in which they appear. Perform data analysis with student data (LMS analytics, student feedback, etc.) to improve student experiences and outcomes for individual courses and the certificate as a whole. Keeps supervisor apprised of status of all projects and issues. Stays current on trends in technology and service delivery methods.

BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS

Build and create a network among central Ohio IT professionals through various channels like meetups and user groups to understand industry trends, demands, and to recruit potential instructors for teaching courses or assisting in the development of new curriculum; Assists in managing, evaluating, and refining processes and procedures for efficiency and effectiveness. Represent to potential employer partners in business development meetings the certificate and skill building that it offers. Collaborate with the academic unit (deans, chairs, faculty) as needed to support the growth and improvement of credit-based programs and opportunities for degree-seeking students. Work with the competency based coaches to reinforce their role with instructors and maximize efficiencies for the student experience. Act as a substitute instructor in software development courses if instructors become unavailable (estimated at one or two times per semester). Meet with current employer partners to discuss feedback on the software development curriculum, understand their needs and recommend changes that would be beneficial to make to the program as a whole.

LEADING TEAMS

Manage program instructors to insure we have instructors committed to teaching courses in the software development track as they are scheduled; Ensure instructors have access to the curriculum and tools needed to be successful teaching; Support instructor questions before, during and wrapping up courses. Closely oversee subject matter experts content development and course enhancement efforts for courses in the software development workforce certificate to ensure changes are aligned to the vision in the product roadmap and employer need.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Works assigned schedule and works additional hours, as required, to meet workload demands. Performs other related duties as required. Attends all required department meetings and training. Works a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and overtime as required and approved to meet workload demands.

USUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer, frequently sits for extended periods of time, and regularly stands and walks to provide functional coordination for a few work units. Employee occasionally reaches with hands or arms and stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls. Employee converses verbally with others in person and by telephone. Vision demands include close, detailed vision when focusing on computer screen. Employee occasionally lifts or exerts force up to 10 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of: current trends in systems and technology; understanding of emerging web and mobile development models; integration of and development of standards of software development; program management principles and practices; industry related tools such as: Java/JEE, Spring, JSON, XML, REST, NoSQL databases, Distributed System, RDBMS, MVC frameworks, Docker, Maven, Gradle, Git.

Skill in: designing and developing software in a team-based environment; project management; writing queries for SQL or other relational databases; mentoring junior software developers on design patterns, development best practices and DevOps trade-offs; leading informal or formal learning opportunities; problem analysis and resolution; decision-making; effective teamwork and interpersonal relations; data collection and research methods; excellent written and verbal communication; developing quality software products and shipping production-ready software.

Ability to: apply object oriented design and development skills through writing original code and updating existing code; coordinate multiple schedules and tasks; deliver key messages with clarity, confidence and poise instilling collaborate on high scalability projects involving cloud-based infrastructure design and implementation; confidence as subject matter expert; demonstrate flexibility; be proactive; develop and maintain good working relationships with associates, supervisor, employers, vendors, partners, and persons of varying cultures and diversity.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Business or closely related field. At least five (5) years of experience in developing and deploying Java-based software in a corporate enterprise environment. This individual must have hands-on experience with common enterprise build and deploy tools, progressive project, and people management experience. An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
