JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Child Development at California State University, San Bernardino invites applications for the position of Department Chair at the Associate or Full Professor rank beginning August 1, 2022. The ideal candidate will be an experienced faculty member with demonstrated leadership and administrative skills, an established record of scholarly research and evidence of excellence in teaching. The Chair is expected to provide leadership in facilitating long-term planning for professional involvement and development of the faculty and the Department, and mentor faculty effectively in meeting their responsibilities in scholarship, teaching, and service. The Department of Child Development is located in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and offers a B.A. in Child Development (with two concentrations - Early Childhood Development and Child and Adolescent Development). Additionally, the department offers a M.A. program in Child Development. The Department has 10 full-time tenure track faculty members, 3 part-time faculty members and approximately 500 undergraduate majors and 60 graduate majors.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

The successful candidate will provide leadership in managing the day-to-day operational needs of the department, including supervision of support staff, scheduling courses, evaluating and mentoring faculty, fiscal management and allocating facilities and equipment for teaching, research and service activities. The Chair will also represent the Department and College with on and off-campus constituencies and maintain positive public relations with these groups. In addition, the Chair is encouraged to develop and participate in activities that support the University's strategic plan. This plan emphasizes: a) student success; b) faculty and staff success; c) stewarding resources; d) community engagement and partnerships; and, e) enhancing the campus identity.

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A doctoral degree in Child Development or related field by time of appointment.

  • Applicants must hold a rank of associate or full professor. Area of specialization is open.

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Child Development at CSUSB houses two undergraduate programs (Early Childhood Development and Child and Adolescent Development) and one graduate program. Roughly 600 students are served by 10 full-time and 3 part-time faculty. Our faculty are well renowned and have won awards such as the CSUSB Outstanding Professor Award and the CSUSB Golden Apple Award. Each of our programs offers first-rate, state-of-the-art classroom instruction, as well as opportunities to apprentice with faculty mentors in a wide variety of research areas and community-based professional activities. Our faculty and students are currently conducting research in key areas such as attachment in children and adults; best practices in early childhood education; youth civic engagement; and cognitive training to increase school success. The Department of Child Development faculty are also involved in numerous campus and community initiatives housed under the Institute for Child Development and Family Relations including the Parenting Intervention Project, Building Executive Functions for Academic Success Training, Quality Start San Bernardino, and the Infant-Toddler Lab School.
