Associate Director of Development

We are seeking anAssociate Director of Development (Foundation Relations Officer) who will report to the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health (JHCAIH) Sr. Associate Director of Development and External Affairs. This role will raise funds from and steward individual, corporate and foundation donors, with oversight from the JHCAIH’s Sr. Associate Director of Development as well as the School’s Director of Principal and Major Gifts and the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations.

The Associate Director of Development will also work on external communications for JHCAIH and implement the vision and long-term strategy for JHCAIH in collaboration with the JHCAIH Development Director and other Center leadership. This position will participate in a highly collaborative effort to manage the principal, major and annual gift portfolio, as well as develop strategies to identify new prospects. This role requires excellent judgment, political tact, fundraising skills and a collegial and team-focused approach to achieving fundraising goals.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the JHCAIH Director and Sr. Associate Director of Development, help shape strategy and implement the Center’s principal, major and annual gifts fundraising program.
  • Manage a personal portfolio of approximately 60-75 principal and major gift level prospects (some of whom may be jointly managed); portfolio to grow over time.
  • Develop new relationships with prospects through research and discovery.
  • In collaboration with the JHCAIH Sr. Associate Director of Development and the School’s Director of Principal and Major Gifts, create a yearly, results-oriented work plan to efficiently manage principal and major gift prospects through identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Work effectively with advisory committee members, volunteers, faculty, and JHCAIH leadership.
  • Regularly record and track progress through the University’s relationship management database and adhere to established practices and policies.
  • Utilize development reports and dashboards to monitor progress towards goals.
  • Attend mandatory and voluntary development meetings and trainings
  • Complete initial development systems and procedures trainings and stay abreast of enhancements to that system.
  • Serve collaboratively as part of JHCAIH’s development and communications team.
  • Organize and co-facilitate weekly JHCAIH development and communications team meetings.
  • Manage quarterly principal and major donor and prospect Zoom presentations, including developing presentations, coordinating/prepping speakers and serving as a facilitator.
  • Assist with special event concepts, speaker selection/preparation, and event planning/management, including annual Native American Heritage Month and fundraising/donor cultivation events.
  • Plan and manage 3-4 major donor/prospect site visits annually to JHCAIH’s Southwest and Great Lakes regional hubs and other tribal communities where JHCAIH works.
  • Assist with development of JHCAIH’s external-facing communications materials, including brochures, website and more.
  • Manage production of short video stories of impact about JHCAIH research and programs.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Advanced Degree in Public Health or compatible field preferred.
  • Five years’ related experience required, including experience working with Native American communities.
  • This position requires someone with a strong commitment to and passion for serving Indigenous communities as well as the mission of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

  • Experience with issue-based fundraising / communications, donor relations and the field of public health preferred.
  • Ability to organize and establish objectives and priorities in a complex organizational environment required.
