Position Information

This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Special Working Conditions:

This position may require the incumbent to be on-call 24/7 to assist in revolving emergency or urgent issues. The incumbent is required to maintain contact with their campus outside of their normal working hours on a regular basis per the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement requirements. Remote contact shall include telephone, cell phone, wireless data access device, remote monitoring of any hardware or software device, and/or electronic mail notification regarding the status of a campus system.

Conditions of Employment

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

The salary range for this classification is $5,325 - $9,635 monthly.

Major Duties

Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice President for University Effectiveness, Planning & Analytics, the Senior Research Analyst will be involved in analytical work of varying complexity. The Senior Research Analyst will perform appropriate data analyses on topics of interest to inform CSUDH decision-making. The Senior Research Analyst will be responsible for complex analytic assignments that inform CSUDH policies regarding enrollment, academics, student success, capital improvement, technology, planning, and accountability through analysis, information access, and feedback to campus constituencies, state, and federal offices, and the public at large.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

Graduation from a four-year college or university.

Five (4) years of progressively responsible administrative, technical, or professional analytical experience in education institutional research, data analysis, data management, information technology, operations research, quality assurance, and/or project management which demonstrates the ability to conduct substantive surveys and studies of problems and issues in assigned areas.

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters degree in education research, social sciences, evaluation, psychometrics, computer science, MIS - Management Information Systems, or other related disciplines.

Seven (7) or more years of progressively responsible experience in institutional research, assessment, and planning in higher education, preferably within a comprehensive university. Work within a Peoplesoft environment, with SQL, and in the CSU system is a plus.

Expected background includes experience working with quantitative data and experience in higher education, psychometrics, public policy formation, information systems, computer science, mathematics, statistics, economics, data science, or quantitative social science research.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
Research methodology, survey design, sampling techniques, statistical analysis, and various assessment tools and strategies.
Database management practices in a PC environment, include relational databases, statistical software, spreadsheets, and data visualization tools.
Standardized CSU and IPEDs reporting conventions.

Ability to:
Listen to constituents and understand their research needs, toward helping them interpret and act on institutional data.
Apply appropriate research methodology and reporting techniques to facilitate meaningful interpretation of institutional data.
Make analytical assessments of statistical data in terms of relevance and policy implications.
Prepare and present research findings to a broad campus constituency, facilitating actionable results.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships across levels.
Work cooperatively with other members of the unit and handle highly sensitive and confidential data and projects.
Work independently on complex problems and work assignments, with innovative and creative reports and visualization.
Proficiency in writing syntax (SPSS or SAS), producing analyses, and manipulating large data sets.
Ability to think critically and strategically, and demonstrating a curiosity toward data discovery, integration, and visualization.
Ability to manage multiple projects from start to finish simultaneously, with a high degree of personal accountability.
Excellent attention to detail and solid organizational skills.
Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse group of stakeholders.
Effectively engage and work within a multicultural, diverse, and multiethnic environment
Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills, including the ability to write reports and solicit feedback.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Skill in:
Systems analysis, programming, and database management.
Research methods and appropriate corresponding statistical analyses
Research application software (i.e., statistical reporting, relational database management, query tools, and spreadsheets).
Problem-solving with the ability to apply those skills innovatively across a broad spectrum of issues and to develop new structures and procedures as needed.
Communication that is clear and effective both orally and in writing with a diverse campus community.
Maintaining cooperative working relationships with diverse populations.
Requires high proficiency in standard Microsoft Office applications, business intelligence toolsets and applications such as MS Bl and Tableau, ERP/CRM packages such as PeopleSoft and SalesForce, and other relational databases, statistical packages, spreadsheets, and data visualization tools.

Responsibilities

45% Perform analytic studies and analyses of varying complexity. Leverage and integrate data from external sources (e.g. IPEDS, DOF, CBEDS, US Census, ETS, others) with CSUDH data sources to augment analytical work and enhance analyses. Provides support to creating a campus-wide culture of proficiency with institutional data sets and data visualization tools, to inform accomplishment of the university's core educational mission.

25% Performs database management tasks such as the creation and maintenance of lookup tables which tie multiple data elements to constructs for efficient reporting, format the latest term data extracts for the update to the office's data warehouse, and investigate and solve complex data issues towards the goal of ensuring data and reporting integrity. Develop successful data analytic strategies and business Intelligence visualization/solutions to guide data-driven decisions. Prepare and present key findings from reports and dashboards for knowledge transfer, training, and to gather feedback for ongoing development and use.

20% Provides quantitative and qualitative data to each academic degree and minor program as required by the Program Effectiveness process, Program Reviews, and other self-study materials. This includes ad hoc reports, dashboard development, and report summaries; and training for users. Collaborate in the development, validation, and deployment of Institutional Research and Analyses data and reporting solutions. Evaluate databases, information resources, and reporting solution tools for University Effectiveness, Planning, & Analytics.

5% Monitor and support administrative operations for Institutional Research including documentation, cross-training, and ongoing development in the advanced use of university assets, tools, and applications.
