Position Summary:
The Director will serve as the lead academic position for Willamette University's American Studies Program (ASP) in Salem, Oregon, serving students from Tokyo International University (TIU). Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President at Willamette, the Director will guide success in the recruitment, performance, and retention of program staff; will guide program development and teach in the program; and will oversee student support and achievement. Collaborating closely with faculty and international education staff at TIU and Willamette, the Director will create and steward relationships at both institutions in order to build a successful academic and co-curricular experience for ASP students.

  • Provide programmatic and administrative leadership for the American Studies Program;
  • Teach at least one course each year and contribute to curriculum and program development;
  • Oversee student advisement, class placement, scheduling, and faculty and adjunct staffing;
  • Work with faculty in Salem and Tokyo to develop curriculum that advances the program in innovative directions and to consider new program opportunities;
  • Connect instruction and assessment through curriculum development and ongoing evaluation;
  • Track and analyze student outcomes relative to informing innovative changes and evaluating success;
  • Participate in recruitment and retention of students as requested;
  • Exercise budget oversight for Program needs;
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including, though not limited to, the Willamette Office of International Education, the TIU International Exchange Center, Tokyo International University America, Willamette's Office of Institutional Research, and local community organizations who enhance or learn from the Program;
  • Participate in and oversee the development of a range of pedagogical practices;
  • Guide the ASP accreditation process in relation to the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) and the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA);
  • Ensure that technology aids in the achievement of learning outcomes and is a successful tool in increasing communication between Willamette and TIU;
  • Serve on committees as requested, participate in University affairs, and contribute to community engagement;
  • Travel as required for Program implementation;
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in ESL, Applied Linguistics or closely related field; Education or arts and sciences degrees that include graduate course credit in TESOL, Language Acquisition, or Linguistics will be considered; Bachelor's degree in arts and sciences area preferred;
  • Fluency in English language;
  • Minimum of five years of directly related academic teaching, administrative and supervisory experience in ESL/ELL and post-secondary level programming;
  • Record of effective teaching and evidence of applied knowledge of current research relevant to second language teaching and learning;
  • Experience working with international students to support their learning goals;
  • Experience learning a second language (Japanese/English preferred);
  • Strong interpersonal, public relations, and communication skills and a demonstrated understanding of the prevailing issues related to international education, preferably in both Japan and the U.S.;
  • International experience and a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion;
  • Ability to reside in Oregon on or before the first day of employment, or otherwise perform job duties primarily in Oregon.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in appropriate or allied field
  • Fluency in Japanese language
  • Professional experience teaching overseas, and/or working or studying internationally

Salary: $80,000

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Typical work is performed indoors in a normal office environment
