Associate or Full Professor Hire in Educational Studies

The Education Department at Connecticut College invites applications for a faculty appointment in Social Foundations of Education at the rank of associate or full professor beginning July 1, 2022. This senior hire will also serve as the Education Department Chair. The appointment as chair will be for a three-year term and carries with it a one course remission. Chair terms are renewable.

 In addition to Chair responsibilities, the new faculty member will collaborate with current department faculty to develop the relatively new Educational Studies major (https://www.conncoll.edu/academics/majors-departments-programs/majors-and-minors/educational-studies/). The department has strong commitments to critical pedagogies, justice-oriented educational perspectives, community engagement, and situating educational policies and practices in broader historical, sociocultural, political, and economic contexts. Our graduates pursue a range of professional pathways, including engagement in formal and community-based p-20 educational contexts.

 We are particularly interested in scholars with areas of expertise in the social and cultural studies of education whose approaches to education are informed by historical, philosophical, or sociological inquiry. An ideal candidate should be able to offer a range of interdisciplinary courses, based on expertise, such as educational foundations, critical social studies education, curriculum studies, and social movements and education reform. As Connecticut College is a liberal arts institution in a small, diverse city, the ability to engage across disciplinary boundaries and constituencies is essential. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated record of successful department leadership, program building, and faculty and student mentorship.

 This new colleague will be expected to: 1) Bring higher education leadership and program development experience towards fulfilling the responsibilities of Education Department Chair at a small liberal arts college; 2) bring expertise in Educational Foundations from a critical perspective to collaboratively build a robust and coherent program of study; 3) teach Education courses that serve the Educational Studies major and contribute to the College’s broader interdisciplinary curriculum; and 4) contribute meaningfully to the realization of full participation across the curriculum and shared governance at the College.
