Job Description:

Reporting to the Director of Athletics Communication, the Athletics Broadcaster and Multimedia Creative Specialist supports broadcasting and multi-media efforts for Washington and Lee University’s 24-sport athletic program. Works hand-in-hand with the Athletics Communication staff on the creation of athletics multimedia content.

Essential Functions:
  • Serves as the lead play-by-play announcer for Washington and Lee’s live video broadcasts. Actively engages with coaches and students, enhancing in-depth commentary.

  • Serves as the point person with all third-party athletics communication multimedia vendors.

  • Recruits, trains and schedules student and freelance workforce to assist with play-by-play, color commentary, gameday analysis, camera operation and video production. Provides training in the use of broadcast equipment and techniques. Teaches skills on how to produce live broadcasts.

  • Develops additional multimedia content to include interviews, video highlights, podcasts, social media graphics and video features.

  • Provides all voiceover content for department produced video projects.

  • Serves as studio host for the W&L Sports Weekly interview show in conjunction with the University’s journalism department, including writing interview content and conducting the interviews on set.

  • Assists the athletic communications office in producing and promoting all audio/video/graphic content through a variety of multimedia platforms.

  • Develops recommendations for equipment replacement and purchasing. Oversees the purchase and maintenance of necessary multimedia equipment to keep up with technological advances.

  • Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field required with prior experience in play-by-play broadcasting. Must have strong communication and organization/management skills and the ability to collaborate with students, faculty, parents and staff. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and social media platforms is preferred.

Work Schedule: This is a 9-month position with full-time work through the academic year. Work schedule includes traditional work hours as well as nights and weekends.

Salary: $34,017 Pay commensurate with experience.

Physical Requirements:
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.

  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.

Working Conditions: Activities occur inside and outside. The worker is subject to vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.

Types of Work: Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
