SMALL MAMMAL WINTER TRAPPING TECHNICIAN

Job Summary:

One field technician needed to assist with winter small mammal trapping project in northern Wisconsin in January, approximately from January 5th through February 11th. The Technician would be helping collect data for a long-term study looking at how winter small mammal communities are affected by forest management, forest structure, and annual snow cover. Animals will be captured using Sherman live traps and processed in the field. The data collected in this study will be used to inform forest management and understand how climate change and changing snow cover is affecting small mammal communities in northern forests. The project is a collaboration between the University of Wisconsin, the US Forest Service, Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, and Wisconsin DNR.
Responsibilities include:
85%: Assist with setting traps, trapping, and processing animals in the field
10%: Trap and equipment maintenance
5%: Data entry and organization

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree

Qualifications:

Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience preferred.
Applicants must have a strong interest in wildlife ecology and be willing to work unconventional hours outdoors in extreme winter weather, including snow and sub-zero temperatures while maintaining a positive attitude. Applicants must have experience handling small mammals and/or be willing to learn new techniques required to safely handle and process live animals in harsh conditions. Applicants should be comfortable hiking short/moderate distances in snowy terrain. Applicants must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
Preference will be given to applicants with experience trapping/handling small mammals and applicants with experience working in winter conditions. Applicants should be comfortable driving/navigating in winter conditions. Successful applicants will be organized, have a strong work ethic, and be comfortable living/working in small groups.
