Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Literature, specializing in African American literature

The Department of Literature, Languages, Writing, and Humanities in the Maxwell Becton College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of Literature (and other Humanities per qualifications) employed primarily on the Metropolitan Campus

Required Qualifications:
Required qualifications: Earned doctorate in English, comparative literature, or other relevant field. (In hand strongly preferred, but expected with a firm date of completion also considered.) Specialization in African American literature and ability to teach American literature and other literatures more broadly. Evidence of scholarly accomplishment or promise. Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university level.

Preferred qualifications: Specialization in at least one other area of literature besides African American, or in another humanities discipline such as languages, philosophy, or writing studies. Experience providing innovative, quality online instruction. Experience mentoring minority students and participating in diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Requirements of the position: Teach a range of courses in literature and the humanities appropriate to expertise. 4/4 course load (3/3 the first year) with the opportunity to apply annually for up to one course per semester of release time for research. Recruit, advise, and mentor students majoring and minoring in Literature, Humanities, and African and African American Studies, and minority students more broadly. Direct the minor in African and African American Studies, which exists on both New Jersey campuses, and coordinate Black History Month and other relevant events. Pursue a scholarly research agenda that leads to peer-reviewed publications and lends distinction to the university. Participate in learning outcomes assessment and curricular revision and development as needed. Evaluate and mentor adjunct faculty as needed. Perform service at the departmental, college, campus, and university levels. Perform other relevant duties that may arise.
