Communications Manager

Position Summary:
The Communications Manager oversees internal and external communication strategy for the Rangeland Center in collaboration with the College of Natural Resources and Forest Utilization Research Program. The Communications manager is the chief content and channels strategist for the Rangeland Center. Additionally, they will serve as the Rangeland Center's liaison for leveraging and activating strategies in partnership with the University Communications & Marketing department and which advance the university's brand strategy through the Rangeland Center. The Communications Manager will advance the Rangeland Center and College of Natural Resources' reputation through public relations strategies that drive purposeful messaging and engagement in support of the Rangeland Center strategic goals, priorities, and initiatives. The Communications Manager provides communications leadership in a variety of priorities, including student recruitment and enrollment, alumni relations and donor relations, media and public relations, and internal communications; across a variety of areas and channels, including social media, website(s), special events, publications, etc. Under the general direction of the Rangeland Center Director, the Communications Manager writes and edits a variety of materials in electronic and print format, including unit magazines or newsletters, web content, recruitment materials, social media postings, brochures, fact sheets and posters, scripts and talking points, direct digital advertising, promotional articles, and news releases; collaborates in special event planning; and oversees the work of designers, photographers, videographers, and freelance writers as required. The Communications Manager is part of a broader network of communications professionals across the University of Idaho who are collectively tasked with: 1. Vision articulation. 2. Recruitment and enrollment messaging. 3. Donor and alumni (campaign) communications. 4. Internal communications. As such, the Communications Manager attends UCM meetings as a contributor and as a representative of the Rangeland Center and College of Natural Resources. The Communications Manager understands, coordinates, and leverages central communication initiatives into the College of Natural Resources as applicable and contributes to the university's broader content strategy.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field, four additional years of professional experience (eight total) may substitute for a bachelor’s degree.
- Four years of professional public relations experience including working with web content, printing processes, graphics formats, effective design and photography principles.
- Editing and writing business correspondence using proper grammar and punctuation as demonstrated in application materials and writing tests administered during the hiring process.
- Developing and delivering presentations and training to small and large audiences.
- Using computer software and applications for word processing, developing presentations and photo-editing.
- Managing multiple projects with competing deadlines that require a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience using a content management system for publishing web content.
- Experience producing and editing informational and persuasive collateral.
- Experience developing, executing, and measuring impact of communications plans and initiatives to achieve organizational goals.
- Established record of collaboration and excellent interpersonal and communication skills with diverse internal and external constituents.
- Master’s degree in communications, public relations or a related field.
- Experience working with enrollment and/or advancement and development professionals. Experience working in higher education.
- Ability to translate technical or specialized information for public use and understanding. Experience in media relations.
- Established record of collaboration and good interpersonal and communication skills with diverse internal and external constituents.
- Ability to demonstrate writing, editing, verbal and presentation skills.
