The Department of History seeks a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of History specializing in Social Studies Education and the History of Education. The home department is History, and load will include core disciplinary 100-level History courses, History 290 (history methodology), classes in their area of expertise, as well as service to the department and the college. The field of historical study is open. The successful candidate is expected to maintain an active research and publication agenda in their field of study.

The successful candidate will be fluent in current best practices in Social Studies Education planning, delivery, and requirements, and will continually update and improve social studies education at Siena College. The successful candidate will foster creative and collegial connections between the College and regional middle and high schools.

Responsibilities include advising and mentoring students on a robust Social Studies Education track, supervising and evaluating students in the field during their student teaching semester, working closely with the College’s Education Department on administrative duties related to Social Studies Education and accreditation, and working closely with content faculty in the School of Liberal Arts.

Required Qualifications and Education:
  • Doctorate in History, Social Studies Education, or other related field with a specialty in Social Studies Education and History of Education expected by August 2022;
  • Demonstrated potential for successful teaching in History/Social Studies Teacher Education;
  • Evidence of critical, reflective thinking about the teaching and learning of History/Social Studies at the secondary level or teacher preparation;
  • Commitment to contribute to the Social Studies Teacher Preparation Program;
  • Commitment to maintaining a productive program of scholarship in History/Social Studies Education;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with others with respect, empathy, and cultural humility;
  • Ability to work productively with colleagues with flexibility and creativity.
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
  • Experience in secondary Social Studies Education in New York State;
  • Experience in multicultural contexts and/or with English language learners;
  • Grant participation, in-service professional development work, or curriculum development related to History/Social Studies, teacher education, or professional development.
