Job Description

The School of Visual Arts (SOVA) at Virginia Tech ( https://www.sova.vt.edu ) invites applications for an Assistant- or Associate-level, tenure-track faculty position in graphic design, with a specialization in human-centered design. The ideal hire will complement the current faculty within the Graphic Design Program in the areas of research focus and teaching qualifications.

This position will support both the Graphic Design Program and the Academy of Transdisciplinary Studies https://liberalarts.vt.edu/research-centers/academy-of-transdisciplinary-studies.html , which fosters teaching, research, and service activities that aim to solve complex problems that challenge the boundaries of traditional disciplines. Transdisciplinary research is a key aspect of the Academy of Transdisciplinary Studies, and as such, the successful candidate will have many opportunities to engage with colleagues across the University in their teaching, research and outreach. The candidate will also be expected to provide service to the Academy of Transdisciplinary Studies as needed.

SOVA is housed within the College of Architecture and Urban Studies (CAUS) at Virginia Tech, a comprehensive land grant research university in Blacksburg, Virginia. SOVA has approximately 275 undergraduate majors within four areas (Graphic Design, Creative Technologies, Studio Arts and Art History). The Graphic Design Program currently has three full-time faculty, three part-time/ adjunct instructors, approximately 80 majors, and has been included in GDUSA’s list of “Top 20 Graphic Design Schools” for each of the last four years.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Teach two courses per semester (four courses per academic year) split between SOVA's Graphic Design Program (typically three courses per year, based on programmatic needs) and the Academy for Transdisciplinary Studies (typically one course per year, based on candidate’s areas of expertise and research)

  • Maintain a strong national/international creative research agenda

  • Maintain an up-to-date proficiency with digital tools and software as they relate to teaching and creative research in design (e.g. Adobe Creative Cloud, iOS, Android, web design, app design, etc.)

  • Maintain contemporary understanding of best practices in design (e.g. UI/UX methodologies, design theories, design ethics, etc.)

  • Contribute to the success of our program, school and the Academy of Transdisciplinary Studies through engaged participation in a collaborative, cross-disciplinary work environment

  • Contribute to school, college, and university-level service and outreach

  • Contribute to curriculum development in the Graphic Design Program

  • Provide service to the Academy of Transdisciplinary Studies as needed.

Required Qualifications
  • Terminal degree in Graphic Design (i.e., MFA, MDes in Graphic Design) or a closely related discipline by appointment start date

  • Demonstrated record of creative research/activity in one or more of the following areas: Human-Centered Design, Human-Computer Interaction, UI/UX Design, Immersive Experiences in Design).

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity.

  • Position requires occasional travel to attend conferences and meetings.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to teach graphic design courses at the introductory, intermediate, advanced and graduate levels as well as additional courses depending on area(s) of specialization

  • Ability to teach graphic design courses to non-majors

  • Demonstrated commitment to transdisciplinary teaching and/or research in areas that align with the Virginia Tech Virginia Tech Academy of Transdisciplinary Studies ( https://liberalarts.vt.edu/research-centers/academy-of-transdisciplinary-studies.html)

  • Demonstrated record of creative research, practice, and/or teaching in one or more of the following areas: motion graphics, illustration, immersive experiences, environmental graphics, data visualization, web/interaction, typography, branding, design history, and/or design research

  • Demonstrated ability to work with industry in graphic design (e.g. ability to work with national and/or international clients)

  • Demonstrated commitment to leadership in an academic setting.
