Department Information
The Department of Music is positioned within the College of Arts
and Sciences, which is the largest of the University's four
colleges. Approximately 195 full-time faculty teach 3,000 students
in thirteen departments, with majors encompassing the arts and
humanities, social and behavioral sciences, sciences and
mathematics, fine and performing arts, and select professional
programs. The Department of Music offers a wide range of
opportunities for students to master the principles, skills and
techniques necessary to be successful in the performing arts, music
education, music therapy and other music fields. Our program
provides a competitive advantage to students as they seek entry
into the larger cultural community.
Job Summary
Georgia College seeks a candidate with the enthusiasm, skills, and
demonstrated ability to establish and grow a stellar music therapy
program at one of the nation's top public liberal arts
universities. We seek a highly motivated individual who will
contribute to a dynamic, nurturing, and inclusive learning
environment with a diverse and talented student body. The
successful candidate will serve as a faculty member and Clinical
Coordinator of the undergraduate and equivalency master's programs.
The candidate will also manage, oversee, and service the daily
operations of our on-campus music therapy clinic, off-campus
contracts, and local partners. The position includes coordination
and supervision responsibilities related to practicum, fieldwork,
and internships. The candidate will teach assigned courses
dependent on the needs of the music therapy program and the
qualifications and interests of the applicant. The job scope is
primarily teaching, clinical and student supervision, and some
administrative duties.
Responsibilities
Faculty - Teaching/Instructing
- Teach in areas of expertise and departmental need in undergraduate and possibly graduate music therapy courses
- Mentor students
- Clinically supervise music therapy students
- Regular course meetings and instruction
Faculty employees also contribute to the Georgia College core curriculum by teaching topical freshman (GC1Y) or sophomore seminar (GC2Y) courses. All Georgia College faculty share the responsibility of teaching our core curriculum and providing foundation courses for majors and non-majors alike. To carry out our public liberal arts mission, we seek faculty with the desire and ability to engage students as they launch their intellectual journey.
Faculty - Service to Institution
All faculty contribute service to the institution. Compared with
tenure track faculty, lecturers have a reduced service expectation.
Service may include work at any level within the institution and
may include a balance of professional and non-professional
community service. The majority of contributions in this area
should be departmental service. Examples include, but are not
limited to the following.
1. Support departmental programs and efforts at recruiting
majors
2. Serve as member or officer on departmental, college, and
university committee
3. Develop and/or participate in special programs or projects
4. Attend and encourage students to attend co-curricular activities
organized by the department
Faculty - Professional Development
Although lecturers are not required to publish, engaging in
scholarship activity that informs classroom instruction is strongly
encouraged. Scholarship of teaching and learning is especially
valued.
Some examples of professional development activities include the
following:
1. attending conferences,
2. presenting at professional meetings,
3. applying for grants,
4. participating in professional organizations, and
5. publishing in appropriate venues.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
1. Participate in music therapy student-focused curricular
activities that foster scholarly activity and university or
community service
2. Teach interdisciplinary courses
3. Contribute to the professional preparation of students by active
participation in local, state, regional, and national
professionally related organizations
Faculty - Clinical Supervision
1. Maintain clinical documentation and student clinical training
records
2. Promote and market individual and group services to generate
contracts
3. Conduct initial music therapy assessments for referrals
4. Facilitate individual and group sessions with client-centered,
measurable goals, and process with student observers
5. Maintain standard data-gathering techniques during all phases of
clinical processing including assessment, therapy, and
evaluation
6. Adhere to established clinical documentation standards in a
timely fashion
7. Consult with and work together with Music Therapy faculty to
ensure that students are meeting clinical competencies in a
consistent manner towards preparedness for full-time internship
placements
8. Network, develop, and maintain contracts with relevant
facilities
9. Maintain MT-BC, Georgia Music Therapy License, and liability
insurance
10. Administrate clinical practicum and internship placements
11. Administrate the Georgia College Music Therapy Clinic
12. Provide clinical music therapy services to clients
13. Supervise music therapy practicum students and interns
14. Develop and maintain relationships with local music therapists
and clinical training facilities
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
The successful candidate must meet the following minimum
qualifications:
1. Ph.D. in Music Education with an emphasis in music therapy, or
comparable doctoral degree in Music Therapy (or A.B.D. (must
complete within the first year))
2. Must meet SACSCOC accreditation requirements stated in C.S.
3.7.1 (www.sacscoc.org -faculty
credentials)
Required Experience
1. Board Certified-Music Therapist (MT-BC) with at least three
years of full-time music therapy clinical experience (or
equivalent)
2. Georgia Music Therapy License in good standing by August 1,
2022
3. At least three years of supervisory experience with
undergraduate music therapy fieldwork students and interns
4. Demonstrated mastery of all professional competencies in music
therapy
5. Effective interpersonal communication, advocacy, and
collaboration skills
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Educational Qualifications
1. Minimum of five + years of full-time clinical experience in
music therapy or its equivalent in part-time work.
2. Record of instruction in Music Therapy in Higher
education.
3. Effectiveness as a music therapy clinician in at least one area
of practice, for example, individuals with autism, early childhood,
intellectual/developmental disabilities, or physical
rehabilitation
4. Advanced music therapy certification(s), i.e. NMT, NICU, BM-GIM,
etc.
5. Active membership in AMTA
Preferred Experience
Experience with grant-writing and accurately maintaining data and
records

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Abilities
Ability to teach and clinically supervise undergraduate and
graduate students majoring in Music Therapy degree programs.
Ability to work with others in service to the University.
