Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Library Systems Administrator delivers advanced server and systems administration to deliver campus library services and supports highly technical specialized hardware and software including supporting all library servers on campus such as Windows and Linux (currently 24 in total). This position evaluates new releases of current software and makes decisions on deployment based on risk/reward to include impact to functioning services, security, and enhanced/new functionality. Installs and configure new versions of systems software and associated programs from vendor releases.

This position demonstrates an understanding of systems software configuration, applications, and space usage to determine impacts as changes and enhancements are made. Work includes optimizing systems performance, troubleshooting systems problems, and analyzing usage and systems load issues of a technical nature. Work may include installation and modification of software and hardware, testing, and documentation on a variety of platforms.

The Library Systems Administrator tracks industry trends by reading online resources, contacting vendors, and communicating with peer libraries to recommend and/or deploy solutions to improve functionality. This position continually monitors systems and optimizes them for performance, availability, and proper use of resources. It follows security administration guidelines and procedures and monitors system access and data security. This position also monitors system hardware and software (via error logs, reports and other system data files) to minimize downtime and to ensure system integrity and availability. Designs, develops, and implements scripts, software, and documentation to explain, simplify, or standardize system management functions. Interacts with customers, vendors, and colleagues with autonomy and independently coordinates work based on priority. Includes working independently, within teams, as well as serving as lead on projects.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution; and one year of experience in systems administration or closely related area; or Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Engineering Technology or Networking Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in systems administration or closely related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with the installation, configuration and monitoring of Windows and Linux servers.
  • Experience with IIS, Apache, VMware, networking and server administration tools.
  • Experience with current and emerging best practices and standards in the areas of server configuration, maintenance, security, troubleshooting, updates, documentation, performance monitoring and tuning for server software and hardware.
  • Experience with database administration ( SQL, MySQL, Solr, PostgreSQL).
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Minimum 5 years experience in systems administration.
  • CompTIA Server+ certification and CompTIA Linux+ certification preferred.
  • Experience in libraries and/or knowledge of automated library systems, standards and technologies.
  • Experience with containerization software such as Docker.
  • Experience with scripting such as shell, Bash, powershell.
  • Effective project management skills.
  • Creative and strong analytical and problem solving skills.

To accomplish this mission, the library provides (1) diverse collections of informational resources in multiple formats and specialized technologies to enable the creation of new knowledge; (2) efficient access to those informational resources and technologies; (3) assistance and instruction in identifying, evaluating and interpreting information; (4) a safe and comfortable facility which stimulates intellectual curiosity and reflective thinking; and (5) programs that connect scholars and interested individuals with information and expertise to inspire lifelong learning.

The Randall Library Information Technology and Systems department delivers a broad range of technology and systems support and services for library users (students, staff, faculty, and community visitors) and library operations. The Library provides a significant and expanding online presence, including online search and discovery, research support, information literacy, and digital library services. In addition, the Library maintains a variety of online technologies to support efficient internal library operations. The Department currently consists of 4 librarian faculty positions and 6 staff positions. The Randall Library ITS Department, working with campus ITS, independently supports a variety of systems, software and hardware, including Sierra, EZproxy, Drupal websites, ContentDM, PharosSignUp, PeopleCounter, Archivematica, Bitcurator, Illiad, Archivesspace, PastPerfect, custom applications, digital signage, Raspberry Pi, MySQL, SQL, Postgres, and Solr databases, Windows 2008 – 2012, RHEL 7, Ubuntu, and CentOS 7 servers.

The person in this position liaises with campus ITS, General Office ITS, software vendors, library staff and faculty, and Library ITS team to provide a robust and secure server and technology environment. In addition, this position supports the integration into the server environment and maintenance of library applications and software in collaboration with campus and General Office ITS staff.
