Summary
VCU's Facilities Management Department is seeking to hire a Superintendent in the Steam Plant. The Steam Plant Superintendent is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of MCV and MPC steam plants and distribution systems; ensuring that each plant operates reliably, efficiently, and at all times is in compliance with safety and environmental regulations. The Steam Plant Superintendent supervises and develops an effective Operations & Maintenance team that is supportive, organized, and professional; and interfaces regularly with customers ensuring needs are met should problems arise.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Promote and offer guidance to subordinates regarding the importance and advantages of multi-skilled work practices and teamwork
- Ensure that Facility Standard Operating Procedures are followed and initiate changes as needed
- Assist in troubleshooting problems and develop repair plans where required
- Evaluate subordinates accordingly and provide input to Plant General Manager
- Monitor plant controls using electronic and manual equipment
- Supervise the start, stopping of boilers/plants as needed
- Assign maintenance, PMs and repair work orders as required
- Responsible for proper water chemistry of plants; ensure adjustments are made when necessary
- Ensure plants, tunnels, mechanical rooms and equipment are kept clean and orderly
- Respond to emergencies as required
- Supervisory level knowledge and experience in steam boiler or industrial steam plants
- Strong computer and MS Office skills
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of thermal plant safety and environmental regulations
- Excellent interpersonal communication, role model, operational, and professional excellence skills
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
- Stationary Engineering and/or Boiler Operator license preferred
- Engineering, military, or combined education and military experience preferred
- State of Virginia Driver's license
