Purpose of Position

The Department of Computer Science (www.nku.edu/csc) is searching for a motivated and excited faculty member to join our computer information technology program as a Professor of Practice. The successful candidate will primarily contribute to the BS in Information Technology program, and can potentially contribute to other programs (e.g., Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Applied Software Engineering).

Last year the department voted to allocate part of their scholarship fund to support an annual DEI scholarship. Our majors are also supported with NSF and NKU funded retention efforts, including early undergraduate research, peer teaching assistants, cohort programs, and math preparation courses. In addition, the department is committed to supporting conferences for women in computing, participation in CRA’s Data Buddies program to evaluate students’ sense of belonging and support, and offering student groups focused on Cybersecurity, Robotics, and ICPC Competitions.

The Department of Computer Science is part of the College of Informatics which unites the departments of Computer Science, Business Informatics, and Communication to embrace the modern concept of information in all its aspects. The College moved into its $52 million-dollar building named Griffin Hall in August 2011. Computer Information Technology courses are taught in several facilities, including our state-of-the-art JRG Cybersecurity Threat Intelligent Lab ( CTIL ). The CTIL opened in 2018 to support cybersecurity and networking courses and was paid for entirely by donor funding. The Computer Science department offers five undergraduate majors (Applied Software Engineering, Computer Information Technology, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, and Data Science). In addition, the department offers an online MS degree in Cybersecurity. The department is NSA accredited CAE in Cyber Defense Education and has approximately 750 students majoring in those areas at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The CIT program has over 300 majors and is considered one of the top 10 enrolled degree programs at Northern Kentucky University. There are currently 25 full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty members, four full-time lecturers, and one professor of practice in the department.

This position would begin in the Fall of 2022. Professor of Practice faculty in the Department of Computer Science are expected to teach computer science and information technology courses depending on their expertise. The selected candidate will also contribute to our programs by developing new courses related to information technology or computer science.

Primary Responsibilities

We seek candidates with research, teaching, or industry experience in one or more of the following areas: network administration, network security, DevOps, or cloud management. Strong candidates with expertise in other areas of networking and system administration are also encouraged to apply. Cisco networking experience is a plus. All candidates must commit to promoting and fostering a learning environment that supports individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Northern Kentucky University values quality teaching above all. Professor of Practice faculty members are expected to teach up to 4 classes per semester. However, there are no research requirements. All faculty members are expected to provide service to the department, university, or the community. This service can include but is not limited to curriculum development at either the undergraduate or graduate level, participating in department or university committees, and community outreach.

Qualifications

Applicants for the Professor of Practice are expected to have a Masters’ degree in Information Technology or a related field and a minimum of 5 years related experience in network administration, network security, DevOps, or cloud management.
