The Center for Diversity, Inclusion & Multicultural Affairs (CDIMA) is dedicated to promoting social justice through the development of co-curricular programs and educational activities that enhance personal development, success, and collegiate experience for historically marginalized students at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC).

It is committed to fostering an equitable and inclusive campus culture that intentionally values the personal, intellectual & academic growth of all students while prioritizing the experiences of international, undocumented, LGBTQ/Non-binary and 1st-generation UDC students. The CDIMA strives to provide programmatic efforts, experiential learning opportunities, and resources necessary for students to transform their thinking and enhance their knowledge and competency in a variety of cultural contexts.

Brief Description of Duties

The Program Specialist reports directly to the Director of the Center for Diversity, Inclusion & Multicultural Affairs. The Program Specialist is responsible for creating an inclusive and dynamic experience through the development and execution of co-curricular programming to enhance the collegiate experience of students, in particular, international, undocumented, LGBTQ/Non-binary and 1st-generation students. The Program Specialist assesses student engagement trends and develops a student engagement plan that is responsive to the interests, needs and concerns of students and is aligned with the mission and goals of the CDIMA. The Program Specialist also advises/oversees the CDIMA Cultural Organizing Council (CCOC), a council of cultural/affinity student organization leaders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage student engagement planning, implementation and evaluation to ensure co-curricular programs and services function effectively to meet their educational mission consistent with University policies.
  • Coordinate and implement programs that meet the needs of targeted populations (international, undocumented, LGBTQ/Non-binary and 1st-generation students.) including intergroup dialogues, awareness days, social justice lyceum series and lunch & learns.
  • Oversee student clubs and organizations that are part of the CDIMA Cultural Organizing Council. Provide support and training to foster effective organizational management and promote leadership development, social justice, diversity/equity/inclusion, community engagement, and cultural competence.
  • Assess student needs, review university and national data sets and evaluate outcomes of current programs and services. Develop new educational, social, cultural, recreational programs, resources and experiential learning experiences to address gaps and to create pathways for involvement that promote the development of specified competencies.
  • Maintain regular, positive interaction with students, follow-up with student concerns and refer students to university and community resources
  • Liaise with faculty and campus leadership to develop partnerships that support co-curricular linkages, increase faculty involvement, strengthen programs and coordinate campus-wide events.
  • Develop a communication plan in collaboration with the Director of the CDIMA to enhance use of social media and online platforms to promote student participation in activities and programs, build community and students’ connection to the university, monitor scheduled events, and more effectively coordinate activities with other university programs.
  • Coordinate travel for clubs/organizations and scheduled events that include certified caterers, entertainers and other vendors and make purchases on behalf of clubs/organizations that are a part of the CCOC.
  • Assist with recruitment, training, hiring and supervision of CDIMA student workers.
  • Promote CDIMA programs and services at both university and community events, education fairs, conferences.
  • Develop resources that foster inclusion for the UDC campus community.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in college student personnel, sociology, women & gender studies, cultural studies, education or a related field from an accredited college or university. (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Minimum of three (3) years professional experience in program development, planning and implementation in the areas of leadership development, diversity/equity/inclusion, social justice, student organizational support and program planning within student affairs in a post-secondary institution.
  • Direct experience working with people from diverse backgrounds; an understanding of how these identities impact their transition into university life and a track record of creative, responsive and effective programming for a diverse, non-traditional student population.
Required Competencies
  • Proven successful track record of interacting with and provided services for historically marginalized students.
  • A successful track record of creating and implementing co-curricular programs and services and working with student government, clubs and organizations to foster student engagement and leadership development for a diverse population of students.
  • Demonstrate a strong analysis of the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.
  • Possess a background of proven, effective performance in working with underrepresented groups, ethical and professional behavior and the ability to foster a cooperative environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts and make sound judgments that properly balance student advocacy with student conduct and the broader mission of the University.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills as evidenced by ability to write and create programs; ability to write reports; ability to collect and analyze data and make presentations based on the data; and, ability to properly handle a full range of interpersonal interactions with diverse populations of students, faculty, administrators and other University stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and experience facilitating budgeting within a department or organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and implement projects and manage multiple tasks and competing priorities independently.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a 'satisfactory background investigation' is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.
